I just don't get it. Just as Marston gives up his life of crime and settles down with his family he gets killed by the cops. WTF!

I know he was part of the gang but Ross had no reason to take him out; John followed their orders and he traded his previous life for a quiet farmers life. He no longer posed a threat to them...until he had to defend himself which obviously failed.
