SUMMARY: '
Destiny, in spite of having a lot of replay value, is a (very) disappointing game in many aspects. Good gameplay, horrible innovation. My expectations was far from met, and I am tired of marketing being the focal point for the blockbuster games being released, promising big but not delivering.
DESTINY RANT AND THOUGHTS:
I have played Destiny alot. Probably "doing it wrong" as I've never done the raid. The main reason is that I dont find a compelling reason for doing so. The focus in the PvE part of the game is too much a numbers game, be it leveling gear or weapons, getting most kills, beating RNG for [insert wish here]. I play Destiny for PvP. Fun, fast paced action. TLW+sniper combo is beast.
The main argument for Destiny being a good game, is that we play it alot. 100 hrs. 1000hrs. Sure, it doesnt get old, because the features of the game were so-so from the beginning. But hrs played is NOT a good description of what makes a good game. To make a comparisation: A huge pizza that takes forever to eat, is not a better meal than a good steak, just because you get more calories and time for your money.
The problem is, had I known that the PvE, story, world and exploring had been such a lackluster, I wouldn't have played the game. Sure, wait for reviews and all of that. I got caught in the hype, created by the massive marketing campaign launched by Activision/Bungie.
There was so much potential. The Golden Age, the Traveler, Hive, Vex, Fallen and Cabal. The Tower, The Last City. The Black Garden. But, instead of an interesting world, we get what feels like a doll house filled with AI. I know, in many ways, that is what a game is, but a good game manages to cover this up. Make things interesting. Usually when I play a game, I will deliberately go a different route than what seems to be the obvious one, just to see whats behind the next door.
"Out here in the wild, this IS how we talk". The one scene that showed promise for interesting encounters out in the world. Cut. Bungie and/or Activision cut all interesting content for replayability. And there is NO NPCs in the wild. Nothing going on, other than enemies dropping troops in an area, to stand around waiting for us to come along.
The world feels like a film set, rather than a world. What is the purpose of the buildings, other than to give AI a spawn point? Or hide a chest? Where are all the enemies that do something besides patrolling a fixed location? Vex I understand, but the three other enemy types should do something besides just attacking/defending. The Queen have even managed to get some Fallen on her side, so they prove that communication is possible.
How long was this game in developement for? Did they focus only on graphics? I have to say, the creativity shown in this game is poor. Sure, the enemy skins are ok, but in regards of gameplay, it is not very innovative. Story wise, it is not innovative at all. Weapon-wise it is down right dumbed down, with some of the DLCs showing some new weapons. All weapon types are mainly reskins of 1-3 models, with some exotics being unique.
I see know that I expected something else than what I should have. The MMO like gamestyle has proven time and time again to lack innovation. But I do enjoy playing, and I will play PvP for hours on end. I usually go back and play games I own. Even firing up Brink from tmie to time (a game that dissapointed on par with Destiny for me).
Just to end on something positive: The game flows flawlessly. PvP rewards good play, and punishes mistakes (have not quite figured out fusion rifles yet, and at this point they do feel OP). The Supers are fun, both defensive and offensive. Even when having a bad game, throwing a super in the opponent leaders face feels good to say the least. I also hear the raids are good fun, and I have to say, the raids (and strikes) are where the replay vaue should lie. The world should be for exploring and story, the "instances" for replay value.
There you are. My thoughts. Mainly for my own part, to get the dissapintment out of the world. As a solo player, (on console atleast) I have now learned that an MMO link is to be avoided.
