So from reading a lot of posts and threads in this forum I realized that the favored method of taking down Crota seems to be having everybody equip Gjallahorn and shoot his shield down with rockets so the swordbearer can do his thing.
1. What I want to know, probably mainly from experienced players, what are the up and downsides of having either Gjallahorn or Hunger of Crota. Is Hunger of Crota an acceptable Gjallahorn substitute? Would it be better to have Gjallahorn or is it like, in a Group of 5 people you need at least X Gjallahorns. Please tell me the pros and cons.
2. What about other target tracking rocket launchers? What about Truth? I see nobody talking about that, and I wonder why.
3. Are there any other acceptable methods without using rockets? Do people go outside and fight or is it too hard with timing and enemies?
And finally
4. Where exactly do these methods change from Normal to Hard?
I know these questions require more than just a yes and no answer but I hope some of you veterans can share their knowledge and expertise!
Full disclosure: I have Truth and Hunger of Crota and I am not sure if I even need to hope to drop a Gally at this point. I have defeated Crota on Normal while using an Ice Breaker while others were shooting rockets. I assume that is a no go for hard mode but I just dont know.

The gjallarhorn does more damage by far than any rocket, however the hunger will do if you have 5 people firing hungers at crota it will take his shield down, I recon people don't use truth because the hunger does the same job and will free up an exotic slot for icebreaker etc.

Edited by Average: 2/14/2015 10:01:02 PMi have been in many, many hard groups testing this stuff. Two maxed ghorns does not take down crota's shield on hard. You can get by with hunger of crota's but the number increases quite drastically. With the heavy ammo glitch, there's absolutely no reason why everyone in the team shouldn't fire two rockets per down. You will head to the window with 7 ghorns, or 6 hunger of crotas per player. You should each use up to two a piece for the swordbearer, just to cause overkill and murder him within seconds. You will then each have 4 or 5 a piece to split between taking him down twice per sword. Although you can get by with less rockets, you will be waiting on the wolfpack rounds to connect before he goes down. I find this to be unnecessary. If everyone just spams a ton of rockets he will go down on impact alone. That makes hitting him without him getting up due to his timer to move lapsing much easier. There should be no more saving rockets. And the glitch does not take too long. It takes me 20 seconds extra.

You only really need 2 ghorns and fired 1 second apart. This allows the main blast and the Wolfpack rounds to do their thing. (This is assuming they're 331ghorns fired by level 32's) You can use other rockets )preferably with tracking). The only difference is everyone has to shoot consistently and then immediately swap to primaries to burn the remaining shield. Quicker to switch to primaries than reloading a rocket launcher.
-
Any 331 rocket launcher will do the job, but people ride gallys nuts so hard that's the only one you hear about
-
It's about Wolfpack. That's where all the extra damage comes from. You have a tracking rocket that then has smaller tracking explosives.

Edited by MrRage67: 2/14/2015 8:52:21 PMI raid with King Toze, I agree with everything he says, except one thing gally is by far the better rocket launcher for hard mode, I have taken it in on my level 30 before and with 2 rockets and someone shooting a primary (to keep his shields down while wolf pack is tracking) a level 30 can 2 hit Crota with a maxed out gally. Also from doing several hard raids with different people, try not to shoot rockets at swordbearer at the start, i have seen from experience, that once the swordbearer is hit by a rocket he likes to go far right or left. Which makes beating hard Crota, very difficult. Also make sure everyone as an understanding of the method before you start, I have been in several games where people make a rookie mistake and cost us. If you're with a "newish" group try doing a dry run, or doing normal Crota with the hard mode method, and do not pick up the chalice. So in short, Gally isn't a required rocket launcher, but it is very nice to have.

Any tracking rocket will "work" per se. It's just gjallarhorn out damages most rockets by quite a substantial amount. Hunger is the second best option according to most mainly because it frees up your exotic slot for either ice breaker or an exotic primary that heals for hm. Hope this helps a little bit.

Easiest way I can think to answer this: 6 32's: any tracking legendary high velocity launcher or even primaries 5 31's and 1 32: GHorn or HOC The biggest challenges I've seen with under levels are death by boomer on transition and taking the sword bearer down. Crota goes down almost every time on cue unless it's a glitched run. Most often the glitches happen when the sword bearer takes longer to go down.
-
Gally while not required, is nice to have. Like others said, 5 hungers will take him down and it's nice to be able to use red death as my exotic. The reason hunger/gally are so good for this fight besides the obvious damage advantage is because of the wolfpack/cluster bombs that do additional damage to his shield.

Edited by BenjyX55: 2/14/2015 5:08:49 PMYou don't need Ghorn. Any rocket will do if you have a competent team. 4 rockets and then primaries will bring him down.

We always shoot one gally then switch to primary seems too work well no time for his shield to come up

Edited by ll Clepto ll: 2/14/2015 4:35:31 PMOk let me try to break this down for you. By the way, thanks for asking a respectful honest question on the forums. 1. What makes the Ghjallahorn so great is the Wolfpack rounds. They are an after effect of the initial explosion. Granted other rockets have after effects but what the ghorn has is tracking clusters. The extra damage these cause to bosses is what make them so great. just to out in perspective, it takes 2 331 ghorn shots from lvl 32s on hardmode to take crota down. it takes 4 hunger of crota shots respectively. So a team that has 3-4 ghorns can conserve heavy ammo and not worry about extra coordination. That's why people love to see ghorns in their fire team. 2. Other target tracking like truth? Truth is great but it only has an initial blast, so ghorn is better for bosses because of total damage output. Truth has the most aggressive seeking rockets but that perk isn't really a game changer in crota fight. 3. Simply put, no. You can try primaries to take crota down but it will take too long, then he will start moving right or left before sword dissapears and that becomes very challenging. You want to get him down almost instantly when swordbearer is ready, heavy is the only way and ghorn is the most efficient way. 4. Methods did change from normal to hard because of 2 distinct facts. 1, no chalice so avoiding boomers is very important. 2, when boomers die a which spawns which creates an additional challenge. With that being said, my raid team now uses middle strategy with Titan bubble on left side(to distract boomers) and we never deal with boomers (only when shifting inside) and we never deal with which da. But we use middle strategy on normal just because it's the safest mode with least amount of threat to die. Hope this helps

I use a tracking Valedictorian, and I'm usually the only one shooting at him most of the time. Would love the HoC though

I have 81 completions on Crotas end raid. Probably around 65 of them are on the hard raid. The biggest difference is the strategy used in each raid. The hard strategy works for both, however the normal strategy is a lot harder to do with the hard raid. I have beaten the raid with no the gallys at all. Hunger of crota is an excellent substitute. It's cluster Bomb hits right after detonation. If anything I feel it's almost better then gally on taking him down since gallys wolf pack rounds take a little bit to track the target, though gallys initial impact is a bit more. Yes the truth is a decent substitute the plus size is the tube holds 3 rockets instead of 2, however the negative by far out weighs the positive, no additional damage after the initial blast. Crotas shield regenerates pretty quickly and if you have an inexperienced team using the truth I guarantee fail. However if you have a good raid team you'll be fine because they will know someone with a primary must keep shooting him so his shield doesn't regenerate.
-
I haven't completed hard mode so i can't comment on that, but on normal mode I'm pretty sure its not necessary. IINM it takes about two ghorn rockets to take down his shield on normal, so 1 or 2 in your team having ghorn is enough. If not, it's not a problem. Me and my team took down his shield yesterday without using ghorn, although two of us had it. I have ghorn, but i was using One Way Ticket 000 because i used my exotic slot for Ice Breaker. My launcher does have cluster bombs though, if that matters.
-
Fully upgraded Hunger will do just fine teamed up with at least two 2 G-Horns. I don't have a jelly yet, but when I do, it'll be hard for me to give up Suros or Icebreaker to equip it considering I have Hunger.
-
Everyones saying, "in theory you can use (insert rocket launcher here) " But in theory, you dont even need launchers. Everyone should be able to cycle primaries and secondarys without touching their rockets. I dont get whats so hard about that. Unless people have craptastic weapons, i suppose. But at least save heavy for the 2nd run up with the sword. I constantly hear people burning through synths when i cant remember the last time ive ever used one. Call me cheap, but free heavy isnt even that hard to find. Just aim down and pick up.
-
Its all about dps during that raid and ghorn does the most, then hunger, then truth i believe. My raid group only has to ghorns but we get his sheild down pretty quick. For hard i think you need bare minimum two ghorns at VERY least. The redt hopefully have hunger of crota. For other tracking launchera i THINK the unfriendly giant has tracking but that rocket launcher isnt viable anymore.
-
The other rockets are fine gally just has more velocity and wolf packs so it gets to crota faster and hits harder.
-
Hunger of Crota is the only reasonable substitute for the gally. I save my exotic slot for my icebreaker and use my hunger of Crota.
-
Sorry forgot the rest of your questions had to make another post lol. No you only have a limited time with the sword so you need to take him down fast, plus his health regens to full in like 2 seconds if there is no damage being done to him. only real way is rockets. The main changes are everything has to be a lot more precise, so there is less margin for error, the enemy's are harder and crotas shield is harder to take down, gjallarhorn does more damage so this is really when you want to have some in your team.

The one answer to all of these frivolous questions is,
Play the damn hard Raid!
