WARNING RANT INCOMING:
I just do not get what is classified as rock anymore in this day and age. I have seen so many great artists this year get snubbed of awards due to it now becoming a popularity contest instead of being musically creative and making masterpieces instead of catchy pop-ish music. I am not knocking the Pop genre but please know there is a difference between it and rock. It is true that Paramore is pop rock and thus a sub genre of rock but it does not represent the rock genre as a whole. As for Lorde........lets just not go there as I have some choice words that would probably do more harm than good. I just feel that the mainstream music industry needs to stop trying to water the rock genre down to make it suitable for all audiences. Rock was at one point the voice for the voiceless, the rebel's shout, the misfits' theme song to life. Now it is being painted as a happy go lucky hipster genre that is full of wimps and zero creativity( see the new "punk rock"). There are few bands that match the creativity of Foo Fighters, Linkin Park, Metallica, FFDP, Soundgarden, and Seether among others. I just pray that soon rock fans will unite and see the light and bring the true artists back to the light and send these wannabe rockers back to their hipster homes.
RANT OVER

Sonic Highways has been charting since its release. Also, if you care about how music is classified, you're not a true rocker

"I'm not a trendy asshole. I do what I want. Do what I feel like. I'm not a trendy asshole. I don't give a -blam!-, if it's good enough for you. Cause I am alive". Dexter Holland-the offspring.

Edited by dova spook: 2/12/2015 8:19:00 PMI believe it's because rock has a very broad base. Rock started with Elvis and Chuck Berry (poppy stuff these days) and has expanded exponentially from there. Every new generation added something new to the mix. LP sounds nothing like Hendrix, Pink Floyd sounds nothing like Iron Maiden, The Grateful Dead sound nothing like Avenged Sevenfold; but it's all rock.

Edited by Hoggs Bison: 2/12/2015 4:41:16 PMAward shows are popularity contests. That's not a good thing or a bad thing, just how it goes. But winning an award doesn't make a band any better or worse, and I don't have a problem with Lorde having the Best Rock Video or whatever. I will say that Macklemore winning over Kendrick definitely rustled my jimmies. Also, as a huge fan of Foo Fighters, I don't think they should be on the list. FF are the darlings of award shows and the most visible Rock band today. Every album they've ever made (except for the newest one) has been nominated for a Grammy, and they have 11 Grammy's from 25 total nominations. 2010's Wasting Light won 5 of the Grammy's alone. The same thing is probably true for LP, but I haven't kept up since Meteora.

Watch award shows like the golden gods. Rock is still alive and well. Just Don't go looking to the granny's or any nonsense like that for rock

RIP rock&roll's testicles

Edited by NIGHT LORD14: 2/12/2015 3:54:21 PMNowadays, any song with a guitar (non acoustic) playing in the song is considered rock, excuse me, I meant to say it's considered "rock". The only mainstream rock band I know of right now is Fall Out Boy, depending on if they fit your definition on rock. Other than that you'll have to search for some independent artists for actual rock music.
-
The record industry has ALWAYS tried to water down rock, right from it's inception. Look up Pat Boone. Real Rock will never make it on radio or the grammy's unless people are talking about how it's destroying society
-
There are hundreds upon hundreds of great rock artists. Just don't look for them at the Grammys
-
Rock Rock has dead been dead since the 80's. This new Rock is almost a slap in the face to Rock Rock.
-
What ever happened to people liking the ramones, and the descendents I mean come on I don't want to be stuck on a bus listening to Katie parry on the radio anymore I want to listen to punk rock, rock or metal I mean all pop isn't bad but this main stream stuff sucks!
-
You want some rock! Check out these bands. Kyuss Electric Wizard Orange Goblin Mastodon Sleep Red Fang The Sword Mud Honey Super Suckers Truck Fighters Clutch \m/ \ m /
-
The 'rock' genre is dead. There are however, new forms of it that are classified as sub genres that are worth listening to.
-
If you don't like this, you're a fgt and probably a homo thug
-
Man, I still stick with the classics. Styx, Rush, Kansas, you know the ones
-
-
Linkin park? U wot m8?
-
You have a point. But there is a lot of really good lesser-known stuff. Just browse for some alt rock groups, and you'll probably find something.
-
I enjoy all kinds of music..except this new "music". You know who they are.
-
Meh I feel a lot of bands I like are very diverse so I don't even bother to label them by anything more than "rock" or "pop"
-
Music taste is purely subjective. What you like might not be what someone else likes. There is no "true" music genre and anyone who bashes anyone else for their taste in music is an arrogant asshole.
-
Rock has so many forms of sub genres it isn't even funny.
-
Lorde is definitely not rock at all. She's classified under alternative, I believe. But your choice words had better be kind ones. She's an outstanding artist that matches the creativity of all of those that you named.
-
I also f×cking hate it when people say 5 seconds of summer is considered "soft rock" or "punk rock" like NO. STOP.
-
You know what you do with the hipster shit? Deny it the title. It can't be the genre if it isn't accepted as such. At some point shit like pierce the veil and falling in reverse was considered metalcore. That got slapped down real quick and put in the sub-genre of post hardcore.

Gothic rock ftw
