Can someone definitively explain what determines damage in this game? Best yet, could Bungie just... put it out there so we know? I keep seeing different explanations saying completely different things. A straight, tested answer would be great.
A straight, Bungie confirmed answer would be greater. Thanks.

EDIT 1: I also need to know, apparently, if Impact is the same across all weapon classes. Does my Pulse Rifle with the same impact as my Scout Rifle do the same damage per round (not per burst)? Again, how do we know? Anything confirmed?

Unfortunately, after reading through the replies you will still be confused because there are so many dang wrong answers. Easiest way to explain it is impact is base damage a weapon does, it is by definition the impact each bullet has on its target. Impact is not comparable to other weapon types. To whoever disagrees compare snipers impact to auto rifle and try to tell me one auto rifle bullet does similar damage as one sniper bullet. Attack is a modifier or boost to damage, it is not considered in crucible. Like many people have said 331 attack is best for level 33 bad guys. 200 -331 will be same thing against level 20 bad guys. Basically a 300 attack weapon will not do 100% of it's potential damage when shooting a level 31 or higher, the higher the bad guy the worse the dropoff to damage. Also for the record is somebody mentioned fire rate ignore their comment. Fire rate affects time to kill or damage per second, neither of which you asked about so it's just adding confusion. No offense to people who mentioned it but obviously by reading these replies you can tell impact/attack is still the biggest source of confusion in the game why make an explanation even more confusing.

the post you marked as the answer to this topic is basically the best explanation there is. Range is also a stat that somehow affects damage. For instance, the ice breaker does not have impressive impact stats, however, the range bar is basically full and thus translates into damage. This may or may not just be a sniper class buff, but i'm not sure. I have a badger ccl with the range modifier perc. I would like to test the damage of the badger on a lvl 33 acolyte with and without the range modifier active. As for impact, impact applies to each bullet. Impact does cause stagger, but it is not exclusively a stagger stat. It is a damage stat. So, basically, let's take the word of crota. Let's say it has 3/4 bar of impact. Then let's take something like the oversoul edict. It has about 1/30 of a bar of impact. So in that case, it would take somewhere around 75 shots from the oversoul edict to equal 3 shots from the word of crota. That is just off the top of my head, so the numbers are probably slightly off.
-
Impact is stagger related.
-
Dmg X Impact different guns have different headshot modifiers
-
Impact determines the amount of the overall damage that is applied per shot

Start with the over all damage. Takes away the 3rd digit and that is the weapon level 331 is lv 33 and 300 is level 30. That means your gun will do max damage up to that level. Second thing to add is impact. All weapons technically do the same damage but the ones with higher impact do more. So a hand canon with lower impact than the scout rifle will do less damage. The last thing to add is any buffs / elemental damage. Hope this helped

best thing you can do is to take the weapons you're curious about and test the damage yourself (vs. same enemy, from roughly the same distance,...you get the picture) next best thing would be to check this site HERE, the guy who's created it put a lot of thought, time as well as effort into it and there's some really useful info (...that Bungie failed to provide ;)

Edited by ShizRizGrizDiz: 2/11/2015 12:41:04 PMDue to all the "weapon tunings" bungie haas done. Theres a lot more math to be involved now when comparing gun. Look at it this way. You have two scout rifles. Both have 331 damage. However Scout 1 has 25 impact and scout 2 has 35 impact. Scout 2 will deal more damage. Now when comparing two different guns.... You have Red Death at 35 impact. You have Suros at 35 impact. Both have 331 damage. But because of the "behind the scenes weapon tuning" even though the stats dont change directly, Red Death will do more even though their damages and impact are the same. Reason being Bungie has nerfed auto rifle damage so much and now buffing pulse rifle damage a lot. Note: The stats i used are not the actual stats of those guns. It was simply comparing how, even though two weapons of different types have same damage and impact, one is still stronger than the other because of all the weapon tuning Bungie has done. Edit: When i say comparing two different guns, i mean of same weapon slot type. Ie, Primaries to primaries. Or specials to specials. And heavies to heavies.

Damage = pve Impact =pvp
-
It's pretty straightforward I don't see how people can misunderstand how it works
-
Attack determines the level you optimize damage. 331 delivers a possible 100% damage to level 33 enemies (if you are level 33) take the first two numbers of attack. That is the level damage possible. So a level 30 with a max 300 attack weapon will do negligible damage to a level 33 enemy compared to a 32 with a 331 weapon. Impact is just the max damage available to said weapon. So attack+enemy level+your level= optimal damage. Impact = damage from said equation.
-
Damage determines if your weapon does full damage to certain level of enemies. Thus a 331 weapon will do full damage to lvl 33 enemies. You can calculate this by taking the last number off the 3 number attack number like 331=33. Impact is how much damage you do per shot.
-
But if you face enemies higher level then your weapon I believe that your light level has an effect on it as well. As a level 32 i used my devil you know during crotas end and against level 32 enemies it was still doing 1505 critical damage. It seems that if you are the same level as the enemy then your weapon will still do its max damage.

Edited by Durn Kurn: 2/11/2015 7:50:53 AMI think of it this way, although it might not be correct. All weapons of the same type (primary/secondary/heavy) have roughly the same DPS (at least they should...) Impact is how much damage each individual bullet does relative to the total damage output

Attack overcomes Defense. Higher level enemies have more defense. To get a rough idea of what's going on, divide your Attack rating by 10, and your weapon will be doing max damage against that enemy (ex: Attack 300 weapons are doing their max damage against lvl 30 enemies, whereas Attack 331 weapons are doing their max damage against lvl 33s). Impact determines baseline damage, which is then affected by Attack and your level vs. the enemy level (if you are a lower level, you do less damage. You do not do extra damage against enemies you are higher leveled). This goes both ways, which is why you can take a lot more punishment from lower level enemies. Attack is not the end all, be all. Ask any raider, and they'll tell you that Fatebringer and VoC are viable, powerful weapons, even in hard CE. Makes sense? Clear as mud? Re: edit 1, I believe in your example, they would do the same damage per bullet. For primary weapons, it seems that impact is a reliable indicator of damage relative to the other primary weapons. For some reason, this is not the case for secondary weapons.
-
As far as I know impact is a multiplier for the base weapon damage. Then total damage is adjusted by enemy armor and resists, before finally being adjusted again based on your level compared to the enemy. That's just for PvE. I imagine crucible/IB has a similar formula.
-
High impact will stop an enemy and keep it from returning fire so you can kill it with out taking damage at close rang. Suros
-
Damage = (rate of fire) x (impact). Every gun in the game adheres to a strict impact vs fire rate budget. Except some exotics and machine guns that use stability vs damage variants in the form of gun barrels. More impact, less rate of fire or vice versa.
-
Impact is the amount of damage done per shot, as well as the amount of damage multiplied when hitting critical. When looking at any 2 weapons with the same level, the weapon with higher impact will do more damage per shot than the other. Attack is a modifier of impact. It takes the base damage of any weapon type And multiplies it to get the actual damage dealt. 2 weapons with the same attack will not always do the same damage as they are modifying different impacts. It is also required to have weapons with a certain amount of attack to harm higher level enemies (remember your first time In the grottos when you couldn't even touch the lvl 20s? That's why). Basically, you want to look for the weapons with the highest attack. And then you want to go for higher impact for faster kills (tho you should still be aware of weapon type, mag size and fire rate). Also take into account that your level is also a big factor in determining your damage output.
-
There is no difference in my opinion I don't see one, a level 8 enemy just takes less bullets to kill. A higher level like 30 plus just takes more bullets

Impact - Crucible Damage stat - PvE

Edited by The Clap: 2/10/2015 8:49:19 PMImpact determines damage in crucible. It explains why a green level weapon can hit the same as a legendary. Level advantages (including damage differences) have no impact (no pun intended lol) on weapon damage. In pve it's damage number. Impact will determine the ability to stun an enemy.
-
If there are 2 guns with the same attack, one will do more damage than the other (assuming you have perfect accuracy in both) if you calculate Impact * Rate of Fire.
