So, I had a thought about this. Since the removal of the material for marks exchange wasn't mentioned in any notes prior to the DLC and since they did institute a new exchange of marks for materials, what if they didn't intend for the material for marks to be removed? I haven't read anywhere about anyone at Bungie/Activision even acknowledging that the original exchange system was removed. Kind of like how we lose ammo when we die or go to orbit or how heavy ammo on the ground disappears when a rocket is fired in the area. They only just recently acknowledged the heavy ammo issue. What if in the process of instituting the new exchange system some code was overwritten or screwed up? Just a thought.
EDIT: I have no idea why people are commenting on this again. This is a very old post that was last edited (before this edit) Feb. of 2015.

Can I use my 1500 spin metal yet?
-
I think they're getting rid of marks for materials, so Im pretty sure they're not going to implement materials for marks.
-
Bring back mats for marks! You mutha lovas!
-
The mats for marks exchange rate was 50 mats for 5 marks. That means to buy a single weapon you would have to collect 750 mats. When I had to farm mats for upgrades I was happy if I could collect 50 in half an hour. That means that I would have to spend over 7 hours running around in circles just to buy a single weapon. If it's not obvious, I've got no idea why anyone would want marks for mats back!
-
It was in the patch notes, they intended it to happen. Marks are useless making them exchangeable for materials was an actual good change making them useful.
-
If some code was overwritten they would be able to roll back to the last committed files in what ever version control system they use; perforce, tortoise SVN, or some in house built one. So as nice as it would be to be just a mistake... that would be an easy fix and should never have made it out of QA.

Bring back faction xp, for materials

Hey, Bungie, any chance there'll be a new vendor option in HoW for me to spend my god damn 10,000,000,000,000 pieces of planetary materials on? Huh? Any chance? Yeah, I exaggerated. I don't really have 10,000,000,000,000 pieces of material. Or, better yet, remove the stupid -blam!-in ascendant materials from legendary gear. That shit is stupid difficult to get in large enough quantities to level your gear. I consider myself to be somewhere between a casual gamer and a habitual gamer. Give me a market where I can buy all of the materials in this game. I would gladly use the shit out of this market and would gladly grind for more gear to level it. Did you hear me, Bungie?! I said I would gladly GRIND for more gear! G-R-I-N-D! We all know that's what you want! Give me a market to do so!

Jup... miss it to...
-
I need a place to spend all my mother-blam!-ing planetary materials! You cock sucking mother-blam!-ers!
-
Lol they heavy doesn't disappear it usually gets blown off the map
-
They did state it in one of the updates. It was removed cause it could have been exploited. Which it would have been, and some people would have for sure been crying about it. Like getting shards from Queens Wrath gear, mats for like the first week could be exchanged for coins and the loot cave. Instituting those dumb ass commendations making you re-level exotics. All ways to slow progression and artificially extend play time.
-
You know how many -blam!-ing planetary materials I have? Enough to build another God damn planet with just so I can gather more mother -blam!-in planetary materials. -blam!-in shit, man. What the -blam!-in -blam!- am I supposed to do with all this shit cluttering up my vault? Delete it? -blam!- you! I didn't gather all this shit just to delete it. Give me something to spend it on. You stupid mother -blam!-ers.
-
Bring back trading materials for marks, you -blam!-in wankers! Jesus! Bring back trading materials for God damn anything!
-
Yes, it WAS mentioned in one of Deej's weekly updates, though this was a long time ago now. So, yes, they acknowledged it and it created quite a firestorm on these forums for awhile.
-
Has there been any talk by anyone with actual decision making abilities about all the fallout over the removal of this feature or just what in the hell we are all supposed to do with the shit ton of materials we're sitting on?
-
More artificial grinding extention.
-
Has Bungie acknowledged at any point or anywhere that they removed the material for marks/reputation system? I haven't seen it talked about by Bungie anywhere.
-
You can't say that they took it out so people couldn't farm crucible marks/rep. The exchange rate for vanguard marks for materials and then materials into crucible marks is so lopsided it doesn't make sense doing it that way. It would seem in that case it makes more sense to farm materials then trade them straight up for marks/rep, either crucible or vanguard. Which is what the old system allowed anyway prior to the DLC.
