The Old Guardians: Are the Fallen Really Our Enemy?

This is a copy-paste from a thread I made. Picture link is: http://relay314.tumblr.com/post/119678494856/maysketchday-sketch-of-naidos-dreg-to-house-of Old records suggest that Earth's guardians were not the first army that the Traveler created. This story details our ancient guardian predecessors- The Fallen. Or as they call themselves- The Eliksni. THE FOUNDING Thousands upon thousands of years ago, the Traveler had found life in another, far-away star system. The beings were sentient but were terribly underdeveloped by its standards- much too weak to fight off the Darkness that pursued the mysterious sphere. So, (like with us) the Traveler gave the species a "little" push. ------------------- THE RISE The Eliksni advanced at a *phenomenal rate and brought about a golden age of technology, science, and space exploration. Their entire race had seemed to have been made stronger by the Light of their savior. They prospered and gave their thanks to the being responsible for this time of plenty. The Eliksni were eternally grateful to the Traveler. They willingly became its champions and worshiped it as their god with them acting as its guardians. Great Houses rose, and it was from them that the warriors of the Light came to serve- each one embodying an aspect of Eliksni culture: The Devils- their Wrath. The Wolves- their Pride. The Winter- their Curiosity. The Kings- their Cunning. The Rain- their Insight. The Stone- their Integrity. The Scars- their Perserverence. The Iron- their Strength. Along with many others. And all were bound together by the House of Judgement- an order that consisted of only the most devote Eliksni that served directly under The Great Machine as peace-makers embodying Its great wisdom.Together, these Houses brought glory to both their race and their almighty benefactor with every deed they accomplished. But as the Darkness began to surround the Great Machine and its guardians, it knew that they were not ready... ------------------- THE FALL They were unable to hold it back. They weren't strong enough. When Traveler saw Darkness crush the Eliksni, it fled as the worlds of its followers were consumed and destroyed. It would have to search for other life that could fight as its avatars. But not all of the champions that the Traveler abandoned had died. The few Eliksni fortunate enough to act in time made a mass exodus into space (mostly the warrior Houses that had the vessels to do so) as their glorious empire was brought to ruin by the Darkness. As the Eliksni watched their own home planet crumble, they felt empty- both emotionally and physically. The energies of Light that had pumped through their veins and made them nigh unstoppable had vanished, leaving them feeling like shadows of themselves. The power that The Great Machine had blessed them with for so long had gone with it. And now, they were nothing but drifters- a once prosperous race, now Fallen from greatness. Why had their god left them behind? Were they not strong enough? They had failed the Great Machine... But they would not fail it again! They would make sure of that. ------------------ THE EXODUS Even in their relatively weakened state, the Eliksni were not helpless. After exploring possible solutions they found a way to survive. By using the creations of the The Great One itself- the servitors. These machines had proven to be able to gather latent energy and filter it into a type of synthetic Light that was given the name "Ether" particles. This substance was not as powerful as their god's blessing had been, but it was able to keep the Eliksni alive, and that was good enough until they reunite with The Great Machine. After some time the fallen race managed to track the Traveler across the void between stars. The Light it emanated was far too familiar to the drifters for them to miss- even from across the impossible lengths of empty space. It would take quite some time for them to get there. They set out immediately. -------------------- THE OLD AND THE NEW The Eliksni had made it to the star system that the Great Machine now resides. Many were lost during the Great Exodus due to mechinal failure, ether deprivation or other causes. Entire Houses had nearly been lost at times. Very unfortunate indeed. None-the-less, a majority of those that had set out all that time ago had managed to survive the journey. They look to a planet that orbits very close to the star in this system, and rejoice at what they see. After so long, the Eliksni have finally found their god. They would finally make amends for their failure and serve under The Great Machine once again. However, the divine one is not alone. Beings that bathe in Its great Light stalk around it. This could possibly be a problem. The fallen race wish to reforge their bonds with their god and reclaim their honor. If these walking corpses and automatons prove adamant of keeping the Eliksni from doing so, then the banners of the old Houses shall fly into battle once more. Nothing shall stop them... They have come too far... and lost too much. "We have found the Great Machine. We shall recommune. We... shall rise again" **************************************************************************************** So, what do you think? Game-wise: Do you think the Fallen should ally with us as guardians of the Traveler once again? Or would you rather keep things hostile and experience things from an invading Fallen? Edit 1: because it is certain that the Fallen don't want to destroy the Traveler. Edit 2: because I added more content Edit 3: because it has been brought to my attention that the Fallen Houses were formed before and not during or after the Exodus Edit 4: Nothing here. But I added a poll thread to gauge opinion https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/127871344. Edit 5: gave a link to the original artist of the picture. ******************************************************************************************

This is all correct, decidedly, but I have no hope for a Fallen/Human alliance, of any kind. Their addiction to Ether seems to have had negative consequences, both physically and mentally, that would doom any democracy between us. We have seen that, without Ether, the Fallen die. This is likely due to the years of over-use on their long voyage between solar-systems. I am not convinced that, if they regained the Light, this would be immediately cured. The Fallen may have tied themselves to an anchor to preserve the martial superiority the Light brings it's bearers. Mentally, over-exposure to Ether seems to drive the Fallen to bloodlust. The leaders of the Houses are now vicious and psychopathic; the Kell of Kings is paranoid, the Kell of Winter was obsessed and the Kell of Wolves' name is, literally, "Skolas the Vicious". And for the previous reason, I doubt this bloodlust will subside soon.

  • Interesting, I especially like your idea for the themes of the different houses. What would you say House scar's theme is/was?

    • I feel like it would be easy to have the Fallen ally with us. Not Sanghelian and UNSC easy, no doubt, but easier than the proto-hive and the worms

    • Good read. And it matches both existing lore and my own thoughts on the matter. As to the ending question? Well, look at the trailer for The Taken King. I think the House of Kings will fight alongside us. And, hopefully, after that, ally with us completely. I'd love to see Fallen become an ally to humanity.
