Why do most people hate RWD?

I was watching a video about the new FWD BMW 2 Series. All the people looking at the new 2 said they liked it better than the 3 or 5 series because of the FWD. That got me thinking why do people hate RWD? I guess it's due to driving in slippery weather but I've driven RWD vehicles in it, and it's not really that hard. I guess I'm just in the minority.

  • Front wheel drive is just more universally produced for a number of reasons. It is universally easier to drive in winter conditions. RWD is mostly reserved for cars with a 'sport' motif about it. But I have driven RWD vehicles much longer than FWD in my lifetime through all weather and seasonal conditions, and I have not yet wished I had a FWD instead of a RWD from those experiences. Everything is equal in stopping on ice and snow. I'm looking to replace the Cobra in the near future, which I've driven through 10 winters thus far. And I'm not looking specifically at any FWD to replace it.

  • Most people hate RWD? Really? I don't understand that. It might not be the most practical choice, especially up north but still.

Because most poeple can't handle a rwd. If the back end starts to slide they don't know what to do. They panic and crash. Or you have a bunch of rich poeple who buy a rwd sports car or super car. Without any experience they totaly rely on the car. They start bragging with their car, lose controle and crash and then they blame the car and its rwd.

    • Because it has more drivetrain power loss than FWD and handles worse of all drivetrains in low traction scenarios(which is why entry level rally racing typically use FWD, and high end use AWD). It also increases weight. I always notice FWD getting the most hate of all drivetrains.

Because most of the driving population are not really auto enthusiasts so it should come as no surprise that they'd dislike rwd for its drifting capabilities.

      • In Ohio, RWD can be real nasty in the snow. I prefer 4WD, though.
