The story in this game is so unbelievably wank that I thought that they got my sister to write it. I like this game and will play it for ages but c'mon Bungie, sort it out.

Well at least is wasn't like Knack's story.
-
If they give free dlc then they can expand and it'll be really good

I understand that this story will be expanded upon with DLC and releases but they didn't cover enough in THIS game, too much wasn't covered or explained. I love this game, I think the mechanics and concepts are awesome but the story need more work.
Off topic i wish the PvE was up to six people and not limited to 3 and 6
If Dinklage didn't talk to himself and actually expanded upon what he'd done, and if the Grimoire cards were in the game I'd say it was good. What I can't take seriously is Bungie describing this to be on the same level as Game of Thrones, and if that was played with a hint of irony I'd be fairly forgiving. The MMO line doesn't work here - MMOs almost always finish their quest hub text from what I've seen, and if the main plot isn't complete it at least ends on a high note. When an expansion is brought out, it makes a new story and also finishes it on a high note, not just string you along. The biggest issue is that Destiny doesn't want to kill off one of its 4 enemy factions, meaning that you can't do anything that makes you feel like you've contributed massively to the world but rather thrown rocks at your foes. If there were say, 9 enemy factions then you'd be able to at least kill off one or two during the main story. If Bungie had more storytellers than the Ghost, the Speaker and the Stranger, I reckon that'd be a step in the right direction. Add to that the reasons why the enemies are fighting each other instead of uniting in the name of the Darkness, as well as giving bosses memorable speeches, this story could've been one of the best told this year. The universe is there, but Bungie are afraid to give too much in the base experience and end it all too suddenly.

Honestly. IMO this is just the prologue to a much longer, possibly better story.
-
We just cut the umbilical cord people. The new born isn't even 10 days old. It sounds to me the people who are complaining about story are the same type of people who reads the back of book covers to decide if it's good or not.

There is no story.. :(

Does ANYBODY know that this game is an mmo, has ANYBODY seen a mmo have a full story at the release of the game? Really people, if you want a long campaign just wait a few yrs till the dlc comes out, even tho there are so many other things to do

Yessssss loved Hercules....... . Season one.

Gotta consider that there will be more that will be made available for free within the month. This is a game that was meant to be played for a long time. So there is still more content to see and more of the game to explore. Be patient guardian.

I feel much the same. This story has great potential but the execution is poor. As for the answers we're seeking after through game play, I doubt they'll be here before the incoming expansion. In my opinion as far as story quality goes Destiny can be compared to Assassins Creed (The First game of the Series). In AC you were a drone with a target nothing more, nothing less. Options for exploration were limited. The story was full of holes and task were repetitive and mind numbing but the overall game was good. With this comparison in mind Destiny is much the same. Gain reputation requires repetitive and some times mind numbing tasks, you do them to progress your character lv beyond lv 24. Destiny's story is full of holes but in many instances I think that's a smart move on Bungie's side. They've left room for expansions to add story and life to the game, but also with this Traveller opens the possibility to venture out beyond our solar system and into new ones. All in following the travellers past. In my eyes the Destiny we play through is Bungie's sandbox, they can see based on people's post where they like going and they can view their stats gathered regarding where people are most often and why. With this information constantly being given to them they can try to predict what we'd like to have happen and where we might like it to take place. There is no doubt in my mind that the execution of Destiny's story is almost non-existent, same goes for the emotional investment between players and the NPC's off at the Tower. Something I wouldn't mind seeing though is the 25'000 glimmer limit put to use and the and addition of purchasing a home/room where your guardian can let loose, relax, watch a bit of T.V. And feel almost human. Just these small little details go to make the game more enjoyable.

There should be an option for "I dont really care, as long as i have fun"

I thought the story was alright, it was never meant to come to conclusion in this game. It would have been nice if there was a tad more depth to it but the grimoire cards have all the lore you could need. And the story was intriguing enough for me, it left me more questions than answers. Also this is a game where you just have to listen and pay attention. Go to the vendors and listen to what they say, no you can't choose to talk to them, but just stand around. Sometimes, especially the cryptark, they'll just say cryptic ass things or drop hints about lore and events. I for one can't wait for the dlc to drop and to see the next installment of the story and this game
-
I actually like it. It's not a traditional single player story but the breadth of possibilities for future story lines has me excited. I frequently find myself looking into the grimoire section to discover a little more backstory.
-
I wish people would stop complaining about "the story," as that doesn't give Bungie anything useful to work with. Is it the story itself or the way it was told? Because that's an incredibly important distinction that I rarely see people talking about. IMO the story and lore are excellent, it's the execution and the way you feel involved (or in this case, not involved) that's the problem.

Ghost was out doing Patrol on Earth, and got a Guardian loot drop. That's the origin story of everyone. You're equipment for your ghost to save the solar system from the darkness. You want to know things? Bah! When was the last time you explained to a hammer that you were using it to build a stool? If it was smart it would figure it out, and if it wasn't, oh well, it's just a hammer. Ghosts could just go find and resurrect another bullet sponge to watch it's back while it saves the solar system. Guardians, steadfast, strong, and determined, use an array of powerful weapons and traveler technology to defeat their foes. What do Ghosts use to defeat their foes? Guardians. You can always see who's in charge of a military by looking at whomever is not shooting the guns.

This is a growing universe a lot isn't explained if you realise and with more mission coming it will continue this is the first game. Also this isn't halo and it has a certain type of MMORPG characteristics but really it isn't so no need to wine.

Edited by MALIFO: 9/17/2014 5:44:36 PMYou do realize we're getting more story right? For free. The Queen from the Rift has more story, it's an upcoming event. Calm down.
-
Who cares about the story its not star wars.
-
Where was the cutscene from the trailer when the hunter pointed his gun at the trailer and said these parts are too dangerous?
-
There going to bleed us of our money thru dlc that's how there going to continue the story, so disappointed that was so short
-
Hey..... did you know that this is only the beginning of the story. With the expansions comes more story. You do realize that this is also an mmo the story grows with the expansions.
-
Wow 52% passable. I knew the story wasn't going to be last of us or mass effect quality. So I'm fine with it.
-
Two words. Dark. Souls. That game had virtually no in-game story. Vague and made little sense. But the lore was online, built up through the wiki's and community. And that game did ok last time I checked. I think this world has tonnes of potential, and eventually all this bitching about the story at launch will be forgotten. Imho anyway.

Most MMO type games don't have a good story....for instance World of Watercraft....and look how well that game is doing.....Bungie is combining alot of different elements here...as long as the game is fun.I have no problems....the story is passable, pretty bad though for sure...but people who expected a Halo type story need to rethink and look what Bungie is trying to accomplish here
