Theory ; Oryx true intentions is freeing us from a fake god.

*long read ahead* As we all know, the Hive and Oryx are extremely devoted to destroying the Light. The way we see the Light, is the way they see the Darkness. It must win the war with the Light, so that the Darkness can reclaim the universe. Now, the Traveler gives us harmony. Awoken and Humans do not really like eachother, yet Guardians of both these races fight with eachother against our enemies, in harmony. The then Proto-Hive however have known only conflict. They live short lives, and have been at war a big portion of their existence, and living as prey. Through Darkness they gained power, which meant that they could free themselves from fundament and grow into the powerfull race that we call the hive. Simply put ; Darkness shattered their bonds so that they can grow. Hive have learned from their experience that the Darkness released them. Very similar to the Light and Guardians. They know only conflict and Darkness, and see mercy, forgiveness and compasion as a form of weakness, which is why Oryx pronounces "Your travelers light-.." with a tone of digust. Us humans see those terms as generally good. Now, The Hive see them as something bad. And because they have learned that those things make them weak, they see the Light and its harmony as a weakness. Which explains why they are so extremely devoted to destroyed it and "freeing" the galaxy of it. Now here is the fun part : Another line of Oryx is "The Darkness is a gift, let my will set you free. He wants to free us from the Light and join the Darkness, so that we are no longer bound to harmony and seeing eachother as equal, and we can grow stronger through Darkness like the hive did. If this is correct, then the Darkness isn't truly an evil concept, it is just total freedom and no rules, but we see it as evil because its opposite is what gave us so much and because conflict only gives us grief and pain. Another theory to add is that the Traveler makes us see things differently, which is why the hive have names which we accompany with good things. (Knight, Wizard and Acolyte.) TL;DR : The Hive and Darkness wants us to live free of rules and it isnt all that bad. So what do you think? Like my theory, or not? Support it or want to disprove it is welcome in the comments below. Sorry for bad english, if that is necessary to say. /discuss

Freedom is so relative that I'm pretty convinced it's nonexistent. Oryx obviously wasn't free, he had to invent the tithing system to feed his worm. If he turned his back on his not-so-loyal subjects for more than a few minutes, someone will have likely stolen his pumice stone.
I think someone actually did, have you seen his feet?
We obviously aren't free, we have to fight these aliens so they don't eventually blow us up. Oryx didn't do anything for us, anyway. He was following what equates to a religion by trying to become the "final shape".

    • The Light and the Darkness are both right. What the City is doing is good for making people happy right now. But the Hive are thinking long term, as in to the end of the universe long. That's why they're dismissing "good feels" as useless, you ain't gone exist forever with the power of friendship.

    • Fun theory but a similar spin can be put on a lot of evil dictatorships through history. Between how Oryx got and maintains his power and sword logic from the grimoire, they are not saviours. Could the traveler be evil or more likely have a motive that cares little about the races in play being little more than pawns in its attempt for survival. My theory is the Traveller was a weapon, brought in to the fight too late or failed its task. Happens to be sentient and after it's path and a time with the fallen ended up on our doorstep broken. The Ghosts and light our races gain could be the equivalent of antibodies or white blood cells attempting to protect itself while dormant.

    • Well basically it amounts to the way civilization as a whole is run. With some civilizations/societies the idea is 'survival of the strongest'/etc so as to where you get what you earn. Others like our Western society today are not actively trying to let people die of hunger/cold weather/etc. With oryx he wants it to be like how it is with the hive: survival of the fittest. Oryx himself doesn't even neccesary seem to care if he's defeated so long as whoever defeats him carries on his ideology. For the city, there is freedom in many things of what can be done even for those who may be disadvantaged. And with the guardians we are fighting for the city to keep that the way it is. I'm not good at explaining things fyi.

    • The worm gods didn't really free them more just enslaved them differently. Also oryx really just wants to kill/take us. Not enlighten us with his religion.

      • Kind of reminds me of David Zindell character Danlo. He takes a vow of Ahimsa (in Zen-Buddhism non-violence) as the ultimate 'fvck you!' I think this is the main danger to the Vanguard that Osiris represented: what if Guardians suddenly start to ask 'why?'

            • Doesn't oryx proclaim to be a god? If so we killed him so how is he a God then? And for that matter the traveler is supposedly dead too so is it a god? Are they both just false gods?

                • Just a quick things dear, light and dark are not tied to moral spectrums. Good and evil are human words we put on things. The light and dark, sky and deep, traveler and darkness are just entities that are selfish and want themselves to survive.

                  • There's always two sides to a story. To us they're evil but to them we're evil. It's when you lose that the story goes on to paint you as the evil entity that must be vanquished.

                    • It sounds like the darkness is chaos and the light is order. Think of modern society yes people may feel shackled and restrained but without laws and rules we would have no society. If everyone did whatever they felt like without consequences and a goal of self empowerment that wouldn't go so well.

                            • The Hive don't actually make sense; worms eat light so destroying all light kills off the species. I really don't see the point in thinking about the lore when they put zero amount of effort into making it. What the hell even is the Darkness? Fallen and Cabal are quite clearly not minions of it. God knows what the Vex's agenda is and the Hive are contradictory. Even if we didn't know that they completely changed the original story of the game a short time before launch, you could quite easily tell.

                            • The Darkness can set you free, because there are no rules but your own. You are not bound by sentiments or meaningful things like protecting others or preserving life. From Oryx' perspective these things are shackles. The Darkness allows you to to dismiss all these shackles and do what you want. But this is Oryx' will. What he will do is remove your own will and instill his own within you. So the only thing you want to do is live according to his will however you please. In a way, this freedom is an illusion. In terms of whether or not the Darkness is all that bad, remember that they wish to push the universe into an end state where the only beings alive are the strongest, and everyone else no longer exists. And that is definitely bad.

                              • Did you forget the Hives entire existence is in accordance with the sword logic and they strive towards the final shape of the universe, where one species is left because it has killed or outlived every other one? This is why oryx kills everything in his path.
