It's not like they do the same thing with the sword on Crota. Imagine if the swordcarrier was randomly chosen to go after Crota.

It will never happen. Get used to the new system (it's been like this for months so not really new) or quit raiding. Atheon is so god damned easy at this stage, it's sad when people struggle on that encounter.
