Apparently those of you who claim to have "earned" their Icebreaker through nightfall, weekly heroic, raids, crucible and ROC strikes have no clue what RNG is. Since RNG determines what items you get there is NO earning involved. It's all RANDOM!! Hence the term RNG - RANDOM Number Generator. This means a person's first run through any of those has just as much of a chance to get that item as you do.
Now that we've gotten that out of the way, those who have obtained exotic weapons from Mentor Missives, or purchased them with strange coins have actually "earned" them. How can I say that? Easy, an Exotic Bounty has multiple steps to complete with a fixed reward at the end, running the weekly heroic every week to collect and save strange coins is also a set reward that they can use to purchase whatever Xur offers in exchange for the coins they earned.
Now for the idiots explanation: you get a Christmas or Birthday card that contains money, that is a gift, you didn't earn it in any way.
You get a job, work your shifts and collect a paycheck, you've earned that money.
The sad part, only the ones that already understand the difference between earned and found will read all the way through this post, the rest will just defend their hard "earned" RNG drop...
