I've always heard it said that atheists who try to believe are saved.
Though I do not think this necessarily means atheists who do not consciously try to believe are precluded from salvation, for their subconscious desire may differ from their conscious desire.
Basically, the way I see it, any atheist that lives a good moral life for the benefit of others, has a subconscious desire for the Church, and thus is saved.
