You might play digital version at midnight
Downloading the digital version does not mean you will get to play at midnight. The digital version will allow you to play at midnight pdt. If you live on the east coast, it's 3am. I'm not sure how it works for other countries besides US. Look at the description at the store. However if you preordered a hard copy and your retail store is doing a midnight release, you will be able to play after you get home and download it.
"you may download the game before then(September 9th), but it will not be playable until 12:01 am pdt/ 3:01 am edt on the release date." -under digital description

I fully expect there to be a couple hours of additional install/download time at midnight. So I will be starting that off and going to bed. :)

I live in the uk and have looked at the download version on my xbox, it says I can play from midnight on the 9th.

I suspect that neither ms or sony are going to add any layer of restriction. There point is it is up to bungie to activate the servers as soon as the servers become available I am sure you will be able to play. On 9/8 at like 5AM EST. If you insist on waiting until 3AM the following day than go ahead. That is your choice.

9 RepliesThey said servers go live as soon as it's September ninth somewhere in the world. So if I'm in est, the international date line is 17 hours ahead. This being said, for anyone in est the game servers should be going up at eight am Monday morning. So if I preload it on the seventh, why wouldn't I be playing it?

3 RepliesIf you have the digital version you will be able to play it at midnight on your countries time (this is not speculation). For example am on XBONE in the UK and I've downloaded the digital version, On the description (for UK obviously) it states "... YOU MAY DOWNLOAD THE GAME FROM XBOX LIVE BEFORE THEN, BUT IT WILL NOT BE PLAYABLE UNTIL 12:01 AM BST ON THE RELEASE DATE." that means I/UK will be playing Destiny on 9/9/14 on the dot by one minute. That does not mean USA players will be playing Destiny on 8/9/14. You will be able to play it on 9/9/14 on the dot, in your time zone. Futher more Bungie has said: "When it is September 9th somewhere in the world, and you have access to your very own version of Destiny, it will be time for you to create a character that will keep you company for a good, long time. Retailers will stick to time-zones. Our servers won’t know the difference. Retailers will break street date. Our servers won’t."
