Some things:
Have you played RuneScape? In RuneScape, they have gigantic open markets, where everyone is selling everything. Since there's no voice chat, it's all text. And your screen is exploding with text. There's no way to read it all.
Have you played CoD or Halo? There are some hideous trolls.
So now combine these: a flood of information, all audio, with little filter, complete with trolls, scammers, actual people, and everything in between.
Granted, Bungie's response is rather extreme. But so is yours.
I've been musing on this, and I've thought of an idea. Have a set number of podiums or platforms or something, say 20 of these, where anyone can get up and talk. There would be a short list of broad topics to discuss: trading, stories, tactics, etc. There would be a time limit on each speech, like 10 minutes or so. Anyone walking by could stop, listen to whatever anyone speaking at a podium had to say, and leave. Then, people could distribute their messages, but only when people wanted to hear them.
Also, I'm guessing that some sort of Destiny vernacular will evolve. In Halo, honking from a vehicle meant "Get in!", and shooting a teammates' vehicle meant "Oy! Wait for me!" I'm guessing something similar will evolve in Destiny.

But there's no text chat, and you can't sell items to other players (at the moment) so I don't see how the runescape analogy applies here in the slightest.

Edited by CHUB: 6/17/2014 5:49:32 PMThe analogy in Runescape applies because of the flood of information you'd get if you had proximity chat. And trading might show up.

But there's only room for 6 players per area. It'd be no worse that BtB used to be.
-
Oh. I didn't know that. Never mind. Go proximity chat.

Go proximity chat!

Do remember that that is the alpha build though. It may fluctuate a bit, but I don't see it being more than 10 or so.

True enough.
