Christians: Do children go to Hell?

I heard that since we are born with original sin, we have to accept Jesus as the Lord and Savior in order to enter the kingdom of Heaven. The only way is through him according John's gospel. If a child dies early, with the sin and not accepting Christ. What happens to them? And I'm not a troll like the idiotic Magooga, I actually want to learn so someone please explain and bring your sources. Thanks.

  • This is why I don't accept religion to many strings attached and not any logic that I can see behind it

  • So Christians believe Jews go to hell? If so, all 6 million Jews that died from the holocaust also just went straight to hell? Talk about a lose lose.

    • So, uh, according to what age? Because a quick scan of Wikipedia says in some places adulthood ranges from 13-21.

    • Simply put: They need to be young enough to have a certain innocence, but if they don't have that innocence they need to accept Jesus. I was going to go deeper, but I don't feel like preaching/typing a paragraph.

If Jesus is real I wouldn't worship him anyways because we are all considered children of God, he just lucked out and got super powers. I think everybody would be surprised at the amount of people that would currently hang themselves on crosses until death in exchange for pardoning everybody's sins. Edit: Also I think it's dumb as hell that anybody can go to Hell if God supposedly knows you before you even born.

I have no place to assess how God would judge those situations. Withal, I believe he is merciful and righteous, and will make the right decision regarding each specific case. In short, we can only speculate, but we have to have faith that God is just.

      • It truly depends on how early. Within a year due to some complications? Christians tend to baptize their children between the first or second week of their birth. My parents did that to me. By baptism, a person is "saved" in essence because the sin is "washed away". Miscarriage? According to the Christians here, if the baby died due to miscarriage, they are sent to heaven anyways. It also depends on which version of the Bible and if you're going with New or Old Testament. I may sound like a fundy, but I'm not.

      • If you accept Jesus as your savior, you go to heaven. Everyone else goes to hell. I'm not sure at what point a person is to be considered capable of consciously making that decision but it's all bullshit anyway.

      • During the first years of your life, before you can comprehend anything ( birth to 3-4) you are safe from hell. ( mentally challenged people not included)

        • Children are pure and innocent in the eyes of the Lord. I imagine he would overlook them taking a cookie from the jar. I can't remember what the verse is where Jesus talks about their innocence, but I know it is in the Gospels somewhere. Let me check.

        • I recall that was the purpose of baptizing children when they were young, but if they passed away before that, they wouldn't go to heaven or hell. They'd remain in purgatory. At least that's what I remember, i'm sure it varies depending on which sect of Christianity you ask.

        • I believe children that have not reached the age of accountability are covered by God's grace. I do not think we can know exactly when a child becomes accountable, but I believe it comes some time after a child is able to understanding the Gospel. Jesus died on the cross for everyone's sins, because children before the age of accountability are not capable of accepting His gift, they are protected under the Blood.

        • Really depends on denomination. I'm non-denominational, and myself and my family believe that children go to heaven.

        • Some denominations will baptize children specifically for that reason, but I believe it's a choice you have to consciously make. Matthew 18 " At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?" 2 He called a little child and had him stand among them. 3 And he said: "I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. 5 "And whoever welcomes a little child like this in my name welcomes me. 6 But if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a large millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea." I think children do go to Heaven. They have innocence, and I'm sure God would be forgiving of a child.

        • If you haven't had exposure to god then you get an exception. I've had about 5 siblings die really early in their infancy and our parish priest told us that, so yup... And really, it's not like your life actions send you straight to heaven or hell when you die, in the end it's about actually wanting to spend eternity with god...

          • Most churches have baby dedications. That's where the parents of the child dedicate their baby to God because the child them self is too young to accept Christ on their own. If the child passes away and have been dedicated they go to heaven.

          • If the child is old enough to choose what is right and what is wrong, God will judge them by starting there. I do not think that a child won't go to Hell because he is so "young" and "innocent" but because of what I talked about above. No, I don't think there is purgatory either, http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=d89oxkxgWK8 Fast forward to 31:28, and he talks about purgatory and why it isn't real.

          • The church my mother goes to makes the situation a little extra dark and will tell you that it is dependent upon the parents. If the parents are heathens, the baby goes to Hell too. They're a pleasant bunch.
