On the weekly update post I can see the white/grey dot profile picture now that I'm on a computer, but on the Bungie App the same post shows the profile picture the same as that golden shield icon attached to the far right of the thread.

You only see the golden shield in the thread itself. DeeJ occasionally makes non-profession threads just to talk to us. I remember when I found out what his really avatar is/means. That was a good day.

Now I see, I hadn't noticed that before. Still, on the app even before the thread is opened the golden shield is shown.
