Inspiration
..so they did use Borderlands (and Far Cry) for inspiration.
What other games do you think they used? And what other games does Destiny remind you of?
(And none of that "Destiny is its own game and should be compared to no others" stuff)

I'm sure they looked at a lot more than those two games. You don't go for a 10 year project unless you've done a comprehensive look into everything else on the market remotely like what you want to do and see what it did right and wrong.
