I agree with OP in that I'd like to see a serious game with mature themes. I'm not going to say it "needs" and M-rating, but I feel like this kind of a story lends itself towards maturity. I'd like to see, within the ruins of Earth and Mars, a few disturbing scenes that really give you a feel for the struggle that the people of this universe have went through.
