Chapter One: (Draft)
The thick black smoke from the explosion is still settling as I lie in rubble in a state of blurred cognition. It all seems so natural to me. Like there's nothing to worry about. I can vaguely make out what I think is the glow of a vex's helmet on a coarse hallway wall through a doorway somewhat to the right of me. All the sudden I'm going numb and coldness crawls up my arms like little spiders. My head rolls back and I'm gone again.
The next couple of hours are all quite blurry. Any time I wake up, it seems it's just so I can have my consciousness abruptly stolen from me without warning. I'm not sure if I'm being faced with these problems because I'm Exo, but I'd like to find out quick. I'm on O'karēn, one planet that has been inhabited by Vex. The Vex definitely don't like us here, especially with our reasoning. I've heard that even the atmosphere here is hostile to us, but that could just be myth. No matter whether that's the truth or not, I need to find out my armor's condition quickly.
Focusing as hard as possible, I push some type of rock off of my pressed body, breaking my left arm free. I then push the large crag to give myself room to roll over and look at my Interstellar Tracking Locator, installed in my forearm. I hear the large slab of rock crack. As I look through the shattered rocks at my armor, I'm realizing that I'm regaining my consciousness when I see the flicker of my locator's HUD on my right arm. At least I think I have a better mental state than when I previously was previously lulled back into the conscious; one that is easier to withstand and one that is more acceptable for active Dead Orbit combat protocol.
Unfalteringly, I lift my other arm which is caught underneath another rock and hear the last one crack on the floor. The feeling of the strongest anxiety and terror strikes me so hard that my very being constricts. I've made a grave mistake. Vex's have excellent hearing, and even with those two small sounds(in comparison to the vast building) on the floor, I can guarantee that every Vex on this level heard it, whichever one that is. As I get up, I recall that im the left corner of the room there are two rooms that have been exposed due to the blast. I get up as quickly as possible and head for the empty doorway which Is thankfully clear now.
Upon my intended swift progression across the now rough floor, I begin to feel as though I'd do as many humans do when they drop into a planet for the first time. Vomit.
My levels have to be off. The thought of this makes me quite uneasy and I feel the horror of my faction's departure sink in. The Paraclipt. It was the complete objective of my mission. I'm not sure where my faction has gone, and I need to get out of this vault-like edifice to retrieve them and execute the mission.
I make right, down the arched, tan hallway and discover a door. I reach into the handle and turn it while battling the urgency and the importance of my speed and the volume at which I attempt to leave. The last thing I want to do is disturb more Vex's, if I haven't disturbed plenty already. Vex's don't hear like most beings, their hearing is different. Vex's have incredibly acute sensory nerves all throughout their body, allowing them to feel vibrations in surfaces hundreds of meters away. Meaning, a vibration of something small, like a footstep, can be made known to a Vex even through the halls of a plex — it's what we call structures created by the vex's.
I continue to make an effort to open the door with haste and low sound. All the sudden the handle clicks and I hear a sound as if the door were notifying me of something. A large orange oval is being illuminated a couple of inches off of the door. I've seen other holo's that look somewhat similar to this vex one, but something about it is different. The urgency of my escape is rising, but the question of whether any Vex are coming is also beginning to rise. I think they'd be here by now. I try to press the button-like oval, but nothing happens.
After moments of thought, I try everything I can think of. Pressing it, spinning it, lifting, lowering. Even turning the handle of the door more and pressing it in. Then I realize it. It isn't a button. It's a lock. And if it's a locked door, I'm gonna need one thing. A key.
