So, the majority of atheists are very intellectual, correct?
And the majority of religious people are generally poor, humble and uneducated. Why is it that smart people are atheists and the not as smart are religious? Here's another question: All of the Mormon leaders, Jewish leaders very smart and yet the most religious? It seems with these religions the smarter you are, the more religious. The vast majority of the general authorities, quorum of the seventy, twelve disciples, and the prophet have graduated from very prestigious schools?(all of these terms are forms of leadership within our church)
I know this is confusing and I've pieced this together terribly but I guess what my question is why is it like this?
And yes I've made a lot of generalizations and I'm sure there's lots of smart religious people(that don't belong to these two religions) and dumb atheists. But these are just generalizations.

Edited by WickedNavajo: 3/1/2013 3:09:07 PMI don't think religiousness and intelligence are directly proportional. However, I'm certain that intelligence will allow you to prove your points better, and usually religious books can show you wisdom and teach you to be a better person.

I think that's a false perception on your part. There are lots of intelligent religious people and lots of unintelligent atheists. I don't think being more intelligent makes you more likely to be a theist or an atheist, but it does make you better at rationalizing your beliefs, whatever they are. If you're a theist, you'll be better at convincing yourself God exists if you're more intelligent. If you're an atheist, you're be better at convincing yourself God doesn't exist if you're more intelligent. It won't make you more likely to be one or the other, but it'll make you more entrenched in your beliefs no matter what you are.

The more religious the wiser you are. I'm a Christian though.

Religion was created to comfort people who did not know the future of what will happen to their body after dying. It is based completely on faith, and using faith as logic would be a very ignorant thing to do. Just look at how religion ruled over peasants during the middle ages. They were wooed in with the promises of "If you are poor, you will be treated rich in the kingdom of Heaven", or something like that. I'm religious to the point where I believe that there is a Supreme being, but he/she/it does not intervene directly with Earth or its inhabitants. I don't know what will happen to me when I die, but it will be comforting to have a cushion under my mind.

because Cathiolics/Christians way back when used to ridicule the smart and those who the church doesn't agree with, therefore the smarter ones decided to either go to other religions for support, or didn't believe in gods period... and I guess the intelligence was bred int the religions and the stupidity into the Catholics/Christians this is just a guess so take it with a molecule of salt.

The more religious people (By which I mean those in higher positions of authority within religious communities) tend to be smarter because people who regularly attend church services or play an active role in their religious community tend to come from wealthier backgrounds than those who don't practice.

So the shepherds can herd the sheep.

It's the same reason why smart people gravitate to the leadership roles in any organization.

Generalizations all over the place. This thread was a bad, bad idea.
