In halo.bungie.net, Forum Moderators were given several functions to keep the boards clean. Most were, to my knowledge, preserved in the transition to bungie.next including the fabled 'Ban Hammer' and Post edit. However, one was lost; the ability to hide/lock threads.
The new mute system is a great addition to the site. It enhances users forum going experience by self-moderation and frees the Ninjas time having to look for troublemakers. This is great, but with this system users lost the ability to create cohesive 'wall' posts.
There were several instances on bungie.old where a user would draft a thread that exceeded the text limit of an OP. In order to have the 'essay' in a readable form, one could ask a forum ninja to quickly lock their thread so the OP could be guaranteed the second post and retain the cohesiveness of the essay.
With the new reply structure, cohesive 'walls' cannot be achieved. New replies bump sections of a users OP down which momentarily detaches the reader from the topic to search for the next section. This detachment could lead to a loss of interest and demise of the OP.
Users have come up with clever ways to retain cohesion by creating a 'Table of Contents' linking to permalinks of the remaining sections of their post, but this still detaches the reader from the post. With more Destiny information on the horizon, I believe that longer posts (Speculation/ ect...) are inevitable.
I think a neat solution to this would be to give Moderators a 'Move/Lock' function. Upon request, they could move additional posts to the top of the reply chain and lock them there. Replies would then appear after the last locked section of the OP, instead of between them.
I don't know the feasibility of such a feature as I'm not a Computer Scientist. Would you like to see such a feature in use? Does OP cohesion matter to you or does the Table of Contents solution work for you? Do you think there are any other benefits to having a Move/Lock feature?
