Why is Game of Thrones so successful?

I mean the series itself, the books and the tv show. I'm a huge fan of the song of ice and fire series, and I think ASOIF is the new lord of the rings when it comes to popularity and influence. But it does make me curious why this is so much more successful compared to other fantasy novels. Is it just because they made a tv show about it, which for obvious reasons exposed the work to a much larger audience? Is the story just much better written then most other fantasy novels, characters more interesting, it's a more realistic and gritty form of fantasy which appeals to more people? I would say it would be a combination of all those factors personally. If you are a fan of the series, what do you like the books and/or the show so much, and why is it better then other fantasy novels?

  • It's well written, deals remarkably well with the human condition despite fantastical aspects in the story and has great characters in that, whilst the villains are detestable and the heroes likeable, everything is not portrayed in black and white but rather in various shades of grey. I haven't watched past episode three of series one on the TV show so don't know why it's popular.
