I am looking for some insight into why competitive has a ranking system when it also has Skill Based Matchmaking. Here’s why:
The Boys are looking to get the new pulse rifle from competitive and here I am, yet again ready to get my feet wet in the PvP pond, but I have a conflict with one of the core mechanics of the competitive playlist.
From what I understand, the playlist has Skill Based Matchmaking designed to make you play against players with similar skill levels in order to attempt to find competitive games. This is all well and good as the competitive playlist should be competitive - it’s in the name after all. However, this appears to come into conflict with the fact that you are also designated a rank based on your performance, with wins giving you progress towards the next rank and losses taking that progress away. From what I understand, the game prioritizes your skill level over your rank when deciding who to place you against in a given match - example being a Gold player with skill level 100 can play against a Adept player with skill level 100. This led me to have the following conclusion:
Ranks appear to be arbitrary.
Why have them at all? If rank does not designate who you play against, what’s the point of the ranking system?
Unless I am mistaken in how the system works, I just find the idea to be in conflict with itself. I don’t mind either way, either Rank Based Matchmaking or Skill Based Matchmaking, but it should be consistent with how the system works. Too many games appear to do this now, with arbitrary ranks and competitive matches that forego said ranking system.
Let me know what we think.

If there’s sbmm there does Not really need to be ranks… however I do feel rank based would be a terrible idea because knowing the destiny pvp community stat farmers would just hang around in the lowest ranks
