Callow was an Emissary. His job was to travel to realms that were deemed worthy to be able to travel to Paradisum and inform the inhabitants of its existence. This was to help Paradisum steadily grow and assist others in growing as well.
However, Callow did not do this to serve his land or to fulfill any sort of duty that he or anyone else envisioned for him. The only reason he did any of it was for himself.
In truth, he disliked Paradisum. He disliked their constant enforcement of peace. If the land was always peaceful, there would be no conflict to improve anyone or anything. Callow thought that he was the only one who understood that.
He disliked their restrictive rules that didn’t allow anyone to leave without permission from the king himself. Why should the king be allowed to decide who leaves and who doesn’t? And why is he the only one who gets to access the power of The 8 Principles? How is he to be trusted?
Regardless of whether or not his questions would be answered, he did not want to stay. That is why he became an Emissary. To travel to other realms and find one where he could live a life he believed was better than the one in Paradisum.
After he and his two partners, Jaune and Bron, met Allo at the Gate and went through, they entered a realm of dry dirt and stone. Already, Callow could tell that this realm would not be suitable for him. Disappointing, but he had no choice but to move on.
The current objective of the Emissaries was to travel to an advanced civilization of stone men and invite a few of them to experience Paradisum. As they traveled, one of them spoke.
Jaune: “You didn’t have to yell at me back there.”
Callow: “What?”
Jaune: “You know what I mean. You yelled at me back at the Gate. You didn’t have to do that.”
Callow: “And you didn’t have to speak out of turn. You know we aren’t supposed to tell anyone about our objectives.”
Jaune: “I don’t see why. I mean, people are going to know about it eventually.”
Callow: “If you want to complain about how we work, talk to the king. He decides what we do and how we do it.”
Bron: “Both of you should save it for later. We should be nearing the village soon and you two are going to give everyone a bad first impression.”
Callow didn’t care what the inhabitants of this realm thought about him. He didn’t care whether or not they would visit Paradisum. He already knew that he wouldn’t want to live in this realm, so he just wanted to get this job over with and move onto the next.
The Emissaries wandered for a long while and found no village or city of any sort. It was still just a wasteland of dry dirt and stone.
Jaune: “Did the Gatekeepers bring us to the wrong realm? I don’t see anything around here.”
Bron: “Just keep moving. We’ll be there soon.”
Jaune: “I don’t understand. Why couldn’t the Gatekeepers just have put us next to the vil—“
Callow: “Both of you, be quiet!”
Jaune and Bron looked at Callow. Callow then pointed at something in the horizon.
Callow: “What’s going on over there?”
The Emissaries traveled a bit further. As they moved, they started to notice that the surrounding land was starting to lose... color. The brown and tan rocks and dirt were turning into a light shade of gray.
As they traversed through the land, it became worse. Even the sky and clouds were becoming bland and colorless. Their clothes converted from a stark white and gold to a darkening gray as well.
Then, they came across a crater. A large, empty crater that appeared to be made recently. They noticed that specks of dirt and chunks of earth were rising into the air. Their eyes followed the rising objects and it lead them to something abnormal.
A massive object high above them hovered in the air. It was a deep black that appeared to have a blue tint to it. The chunks of earth were being pulled towards it, breaking apart as they got closer. The Emissaries stood and looked in confusion.
Jaune: “What... is that?”
Bron: “Some kind of spacecraft, perhaps?”
Callow: “It doesn’t matter. We have to leave, now!”
As soon as the words left their mouths, a blue light filled the area. It shines brighter and blinds the Emissaries. After a while, it slowly faded. Once it does, the ground began to rumble and crack apart.
The Emissaries tried to run, but couldn’t even move a muscle. They began to rise up into the air along with more chunks of earth and stone. They ascended higher and higher at a much faster rate. The blue light reappeared at a blinding intensity.
And then, nothing.
