The training hall of the castle only had two people in it at the time. The two princes, Erphos and Domund, were practicing their skills in usage of one of the most basic tools in combat: the sword.
Erphos was larger than Domund and much more muscular. While Domund himself had a finely toned body, he seemed skinnier than Erphos. It was obvious who had the advantage in combat.
Both princes swung their wooden swords at each other, blocking and countering each blow. Neither of them let up until Erphos managed to catch Domund wide open. He landed a massive blow on his little brother’s torso that sent him tumbling onto the gravelly ground.
Erphos, having successfully knocking down his brother, was not yet satisfied with the battle. He approached the fallen Domund and raised his wooden sword, preparing to strike once more. Right as he was swinging his sword downward, it was suddenly stopped by a large hand that grasps the blade. It was King Dezi, who had entered the training hall without alerting the princes.
Erphos: “Father, when did you—“
Dezi: “That’s enough. Do not try to inflict any major injuries in a sparring match, especially not at this time.”
Erphos: “I wasn’t, father, I was just—“
Dezi: “I know full well what you were doing, Erphos. Do not try to deceive me. Now be an honorable opponent and help your brother.”
Erphos: “...yes, father.”
Erphos extended his hand to Domund to help him off the ground. Domund grabbed his hand without uttering a word and was raised up. His long brown hair concealed his eyes until he stood back up on his feet.
Dezi: “I know you two are eager to train your combat skills know that the selection is near, but I must remind you that being the strongest soldier is not the only duty in being king. Both of you should explore the kingdom more often and experience what it’s like in the world so you can get a better understanding of how your subjects are feeling.”
Erphos: “I understand that, but it’s not like I’ll be spending that much time in the kingdom when I’ll have so much work to do elsewhere.”
Dezi: “Then you really don’t understand it at all. What about you, Domund?”
Domund remained silent and slightly turned his head away from his father’s gaze. Dezi slightly sighed.
Dezi: “This is a vital skill that you both lack. You must communicate more with others if either of you are to become king one day. Both of you must learn how to be leaders. Not everyone will follow you just because of your title.”
Dezi began to head out the door. Before he exited the training hall, he turned his gaze back to Domund.
Dezi: “I almost forgot to mention that I have hired a personal instructor as you have requested, Domund. His name is Allo and he is a renowned professor and teacher in the kingdom. He’ll be here in about an hour, so clean yourself up and await his arrival.”
Domund nodded as Dezi exited the training hall and left the two princes by themselves. Domund began to leave as well, but Erphos quickly stopped him and put his hand on Domund’s shoulder.
Erphos: “Listen here, little brother. Just know that it doesn’t matter if you have a personal instructor or not, you have no chance of beating me. I will become the next king no matter what, so don’t even bother trying.”
Erphos lets go of Domund’s shoulder and Domund walks away without showing any emotion. As he heads out of the training hall, he whispers a single sentence to himself.
Domund: “We shall see.”
