Where is the Story Going?

I’m personally loving all the little tidbits of past information being given to us. However, I can’t shake the feeling that with the Darkness now in play, there isn’t really a lot of space for us to maneuver around as far as potentially beating the Darkness. I realize that the Darkness is basically the result of a DM in D&D god-modding a boss or character, but that makes it even harder to see an end goal of some kind. Also, and this is not speculation if they are one and the same, but the Darkness and Savathun’s personality seem pretty much like copies of each other. Obviously the end-goals are different, but both are sneaky, both think power is the go to solution, both have somewhat unknown intentions... they just seem too similar for the two to work in the same story. I loved “that” moment in the first mission, and I love the idea of an enemy that you can never figure out, but Bungie needs to choose one, at least for now.

    • My guess is a merging or coexistence of the darkness and light. The Awoken already have both. A Yin and Yang kind of thing. You can't remove one or the other completely, its impossible. Remember the shard you can scan in the Sludge in the EDZ, you ghost says he has no idea how the darkness and light can coexist like that, but there is a lot we don't know.

    • [If I paid attention to bungie’s ViDocs correctly, undying and all the seasons after will be part of the same overarching story, as opposed to the disjointed mess of a story the forsaken annual pass had.]

I agree with the savathune vs darkness point. Savathune has been built up since year 1 and the hype for me personally is starting to go from excitement to annoyed. I wanted shadowkeep to be savathune's DLC not the darkness

      • Two thing I would like to know... 1. What in the hell is the Traveler doing.... it's now been 3 years since it "woke up" and has done nothing???? 2. Where the F@#& is the new Hunter Vanguard??? Been over a year and nothing! Really??? (Technically we are the new Hunter Vanguard) But seriously do something Bungie!

I would see the comparison to Savathûn, but there’s a very noticeable difference. Everything Savathûn does aims to strengthen her foothold in the solar system and to bring her closer to victory. The Darkness does not actually care. The Pyramid is merely a conduit for it to you with us as it approaches the Solar System, openly flaunting it’s powers. As to god modding, we’re immortal space wizards serving a giant orb. It stands to reason we’d need a bigger bogeyman with the Traveler seemingly having awoken. Savathûn is deceptive. The Darkness is manipulative. Savathûn does not believe power is the end all solution, as proven by everything she does. The Darkness is the embodiment of power in this universe, the Unveiling implying it has wiped the Universe clean of life many times before. Savathûn wishes to guarantee her own survival by finding a way to perpetually feeding her worm, the Darkness wants to exterminate all life as it has before.

          • I don't know where it's going but I hope that we finally lose to something with a permanent impact so that it adds some gravity to the story.

            • <Somehow the death or hunt of the Undying Mind will break time, we'll fix it, then we'll do something else Vex-related since Bungie's stated this is what happens when we let the Vex roam free for a bit. Somehow, we'll round back to the Dreaming City and Savathun, and eventually we'll end the stories for both. Uldren will somehow be involved in this and we'll essentially tie up loose Forsaken ends. Savathun will be rebuked indefinitely or otherwise killed and the Hive will be crippled. Perhaps we'll fight Xivu, too, but it's not clear to me whether she should be saved for D3 or killed off here. In D3, the Pyramid Armada will totally and utterly -blam!- our shit up so hard that we'll be absolutely -blam!-ed even with the Light. Then the entire game will likely be spent building up Fallen and Cabal (and maybe non-Sol-Divisive-Vex) allies so that we can at least A T T E M P T to fight the Pyramid Armada and defeat the Winnower. I suspect the Gardener will have little influence throughout the game post-first act since I am totally under the belief that the Armada will kill it as they would've centuries before. We must act without a giant golf ball above a City.>

                • The Darkness expects us to simply drop the Light and join them. However, I don't see the corrupted Guardians that join it to become that much stronger. They may get new and strange powers, but to be much stronger than a lightbearer of equal experience is doubtful. If anything though, I'm expecting humanity to utilize both Light and Dark and use it to combat the Pyramid ships. Light is implied to be weak but fruitful, while darkness is strong but unstable. A specific blend of both powers will end up making us far stronger than any Guardian wielding just one or the other, and those are going to be the ones deciding the ultimate fight. I'm pretty sure D3 will end with both the Darkness and the Traveler being destroyed in the ensuing war.

                  • Lore from the OTHER SIDE Exotic Sparrow "Do you know what the player on the other side meant? It was an idea that people talked about long ago, before the Golden Age. And the idea was that each of us has a player on the other side—a perfect enemy, just as powerful, just as smart, just as experienced. And that perfect enemy was waiting for each of us, waiting patiently, because the day of meeting would come in time. The other-side enemy didn't have to rush it. Sheer time and chance would bring you together. Think of that. Right now, someone out there is waiting for you, and they know you so well they practically are you. That's the player on the other side." I feel like this is a direct allusion to what we're seeing in game right now (especially at the end of shadowkeep) as well as what has been intended for the story since the very beginning. Not a fight with the darkness itself, but a war with versions of ourselves that use it as a Weapon in the same way we do the Light. A proper Dichotomy. I believe our Pyramid Invaders are simply us on the "Other Side". "Destiny" is simply the outcome of who will win between us and a darker version of ourselves, THE Destiny of the human race decided. Also... Invasions, Pyramids... sounds like an Interdimensional Gambit match.

                    • The story is gonna go in circles or sidequests like it always has, because it has to. If we fight the darkness and win, the story's over. If we fight the darkness and loose it's just D2 vanilla all over again. If bungie had set things up right they could have a jedi / sith style conflict they could extend for years, but I don't trust bungie's writers to be able to deliver on that.
