So a fellow Guardian named Boobel commented this on a post. I just wanted to post it.
"There wasn't a singular thing that ruined the original Destiny experience. It was a culmination of multiple errors.
Year 1 was good. Like if you played the alpha, and the beta, and year 1, you are aware of the reason for the anger that fills the forum now.
A lot of folk may dismiss this, but if you did it, you know.
You had a nightfall that when you were launching in, you were a tad nervous. Because you knew you could spend an hour or so trying, just to lose it all very fast, and be booted to orbit. The sense of achievement when you completed it was excellent. The rewards were good too.
You would run the raid, and be ecstatic to receive the VOC.
Then, you do Atheon over, and over, and eventually, the Vex Mythoclast dropped. And the grind just is SO worth it. You'd relive the moment with destiny pals when they saw you had it.
Year 1 felt relevant. There was an end game gun we chased. We felt rewarded.
We saw parts of the cosmodrome that were locked away. DLC. But already on the disc.
Then year 2 arrived. And it started to feel like the best parts of the game were slowly being removed. We were told by Bungie that we were playing the game wrong. They had perks on guns, and when we used them effectively, all within the realms of the game, we were told we were using them wrong.
Then we started to feel the affects of nerfing. Guns which we had worked so hard to get, became useless. The variety of weapons available was still big, but nerfs forced players to use very few. auto rifles started to fade, our game was being directed by the requests of the supplementary PvP aspect of the game.
Updates came that meant previous content we paid for, was made useless. Game modes that are supposed to encourage team work in pve were forgotten. You aren't allowed raid matchmaking but, we shall matchmake you a pvp session with 11 people from all over the world resulting in a terrible experience.
We won't matchmake nightfall, because you might get someone who is bad. That's better than no matchmaking right.
Then, we got told previous gen was holding back vault space.
Then, luke Smith tells us we are playing his game wrong, but we're going to throw money at the screen anyway. And there's way more to kingsfall.
0,4% auto rifle.
What's VOG again? Who is Crota?
Trials further toxicated the game. Bungie based game updates on trials. YouTube streamers. The community was ignored. The game grew towards trials, bungie pandered to this, pve got a few more stabs in the back.
Lag switching. Bungie didn't seem fussed.
We became iron Lords, and we were happy for a bit. That mountaintop. That raid. But it fizzled. More nerfs. Friends list didn't show Destiny as much.
The last gen vault space limitations seemed a lie. It didn't increase when last gen wasn't included.
Shotguns. Matador. Heavy ammo. Special ammo.
Then Age of Triumph.
Bungie thank us for participating in a 3 year beta, and begrudgingly make year 1 relevant again with some new year 2, but on their terms.
Oh you want elemental fatebringer? Thats fine, but it'll take an exotic slot instead.
Destiny was failed a lot on petty little stuff, stuff that folk meddled with, that was in reality, doing ok.
And there wasn't more to kingsfall.
If Destiny 2 can avoid the blindingly obvious mistakes that happened over the last 3 years, they could have a fantastic game in the making."
Edit: Thanks for all the replies guardians!
Edit 2: Whoa this is trending. Never been up here before, and it wasn't even my own words lol
Edit 3: Number 1 trending. Wow. Thanks for everyone who liked and commented!
Edit 4: Thank you all for the amazing posts! I'm glad people know how good this game could be. How good it should be.
UPDATE! NEW WORDS BY BOOBEL!!
"Thanks for highlighting my post.
The fact that so many other players are in agreement does give credit to what I said.
I expected people to say I was wrong etc, however we are entitled to our opinions.
Maybe these are the people who forget that the game was never sold as being a pvp game. They clearly told us it was a pve game, with optional pvp.
We also were told that a day one weapon would be relevant to whatever direction the game took. They aggravated people by completely doing a u turn on this, leaving many stuck at 170.
If people feel it necessary to repost what I said, this to me just gives further evidence we agree.
It's then funny to note that people said my
observations of Y1 is the result of rosetinting, and I was wrong. I'm that wrong, that they are making raids relevant again, bringing back older weapons. They also have made AR better again, after the pvp nerds rendered them useless.
It is also funny that people are assuming I'm wholly praising year 1, when I simply listed, in time order, things that I remembered from the top of my head. All of the points I made, weren't borne from negativity. They actually happened.
So if you choose to focus on one aspect of my comments, rather than the whole post, you'll fail to see I simply pointed out what was done incorrectly, or things that were done that resulted in a poor experience.
I am sure a lot of people are happy with the game how it is now, I merely gave my opinion on things that actually happened in the game, that left many of us disappointed."
Edit 5: OVER 500 UPVOTES! Dang, is this a record or something? Someone has to know.
Edit 6: Over 600 upvotes. Dang
Edit 7: 700 UPVOTES BABY!

Euphoric recall. Year 1: Great Sandbox. Broken loot system and in game economy. Year2: Okay Sandbox. Much improved economy and loot system. Year 3; Broken Sandbox. Great economy and loot system. Destiny 2: needs Year Ones Sandbox and Year 3s Economy and loot system.

Edited by bFLY: 3/24/2017 10:29:55 PMA guy named Dragoon4290 said this in another post like yours that was quoting that Boobel guy. He gets all credit for this and I agree with almost all of it. Been here since beta and day one. I remember year 1 very well.

"There wasn't a singular thing that ruined the original Destiny experience. It was a culmination of multiple errors.
Correct. But people forget that many of those errors were at the community's behest.
You had a nightfall that when you were launching in, you were a tad nervous. Because you knew you could spend an hour or so trying, just to lose it all very fast, and be booted to orbit. The sense of achievement when you completed it was excellent. The rewards were good too.
The post game rewards weren't any better than now. How many times did people get Sharded? How many times did people get a few motes? Your chance at an exotic wasn't any better than now. Granted, the extrinsic rewards were worth it - the blue flame and the XP bonus. But don't forget - you needed the XP to help level up, and if you didn't do NF as early as possible, you missed out on all that bonus XP. Don't forget how bad it sucked spending all that time leveling up gear only to find out it sucked. RTO and 3X damage did make it more intense, can't deny that.
You would run the raid, and be ecstatic to receive the VOC. Then, you do Atheon over, and over, and eventually, the Vex Mythoclast dropped. And the grind just is SO worth it. You'd relive the moment with destiny pals when they saw you had it.
Raids were the focus and pretty much the only place to get good weapons. Vendors were useless once you hit Max light. Lost count of how many times someone did an entire raid and got nothing but mats, not even a Chatterwhite. It rains loot now. Which, IMO, is a bit much. Somewhere in the middle is the sweet spot. KF probably had the best drop rates. The only problem with that was getting something with higher light. That part sucked.
Year 1 felt relevant. There was an end game gun we chased. We felt rewarded.
Many people felt shit on for reasons above. Don't forget those times when you finally got a Legendary engram to drop you were so excited, only to have Rahool -blam!- you in the ass with 2 blues or some shards. It was so rewarding having 10 bounties to choose from, yet only being able to carry 5 and having to run to the Tower to turn them in.
We saw parts of the cosmodrome that were locked away. DLC. But already on the disc.
This tripe has been debunked countless times. I wish you people would do your own research on how games are developed these days and how TDB was created alongside Frankenstein Vanilla. You also seem to forget the massive downloads prior to each expansion. What do you think was in each D/L?
Then year 2 arrived. And it started to feel like the best parts of the game were slowly being removed. We were told by Bungie that we were playing the game wrong. They had perks on guns, and when we used them effectively, all within the realms of the game, we were told we were using them wrong.
Blame the community. People bitched and moaned about perks like Final Round and Kneepads. Reforge only exacerbated the problem.
Then we started to feel the affects of nerfing. Guns which we had worked so hard to get, became useless. The variety of weapons available was still big, but nerfs forced players to use very few. auto rifles started to fade, our game was being directed by the requests of the supplementary PvP aspect of the game.
Nerfs would've happened regardless. Sure, many of them were head scratchers, but keeping the Y1 format wouldn't have kept nerfs from happening.
Updates came that meant previous content we paid for, was made useless. Game modes that are supposed to encourage team work in pve were forgotten. You aren't allowed raid matchmaking but, we shall matchmake you a pvp session with 11 people from all over the world resulting in a terrible experience.
How much of a difference would it have to Y1 players if VoG and Crota were brought forward in Y2? When PoE came around, people were already tired of doing them. They'd been done 100x over. By October you'd stopped doing them completely if you had everything. "Oh but I would have for the chance of exotics!" Really? 3oC would've changed your mind on that. Much more efficient farming routes.
We won't matchmake nightfall, because you might get someone who is bad. That's better than no matchmaking right.
Why this isn't a thing I can't tell you. Yes, the content has been dumbed down, so there's no reason to hold back OMM.
Then, we got told previous gen was holding back vault space.
I Google'd this and had a satisfactory answer in about 5 min. Do some research and you'll have insight as to why RoI couldn't bring more.
just because hardware has 8gbs of RAM, doesn't mean software can use it all...

Trials further toxicated the game. Bungie based game updates on trials. YouTube streamers. The community was ignored. The game grew towards trials, bungie pandered to this, pve got a few more stabs in the back. Lag switching. Bungie didn't seem fussed.
Agree here. I get that Trials was introduced as an outlet for Top PvP players. But when interest in the mode grew, Bungie should've altered the format to accommodate the new interest. Now, new people play it for a week and GTFO.
We became iron Lords, and we were happy for a bit. That mountaintop. That raid. But it fizzled. More nerfs. Friends list didn't show Destiny as much.
Don't forget the part where RoI outsold Vanilla in digital sales for launch month and grossed $60 million dollars.
The last gen vault space limitations seemed a lie. It didn't increase when last gen wasn't included.
Again, a 5 min search...
Then Age of Triumph. Bungie thank us for participating in a 3 year beta, and begrudgingly make year 1 relevant again with some new year 2, but on their terms.
What did you expect? Bungie created a looter/shooter. People wanted more MMO aspects, more RPG aspects, more this, less that. One of the vid docs from before launch had a dev stating "one of the challenges of making this game was having enough content to people engaged for 50-100 hrs, or 30 min to an hour a day..." So they create a game tuned to 50-100 hrs, and people want more. Rome wasn't built in a day.
Oh you want elemental fatebringer? Thats fine, but it'll take an exotic slot instead.
That's Bungie listening to the community. Go back and read any thread about elemental primaries and you'll see all the people that suggested and claimed would be happy if exotics were elemental.
If Destiny 2 can avoid the blindingly obvious mistakes that happened over the last 3 years, they could have a fantastic game in the making."
Sometimes there's only so much you can do with old/reused/recycled material. D1 is that result. Ever watch that show with Jesse James where he and his team are challenged to turn a car into something else with budget of $2000 and a week to do it? It's challenging, and results often varied. Imagine if he had 3 months to do it $100,000. How much better would the results be? I agree with some of your statements, disagree with many. Some of your points are nostalgia, rose colored glasses, or just flat out wrong information. Yeah, Y1 had some pros, but it also had cons. Y2+ has had cons, but also alot of pros. Many of the changes were for the better, and many were sparked by the community that Bungie doesn't listen to. If you don't the direction this game has taken, well, this is what happens a dev lets the community drive major changes instead of standing firm in their vision. But they'd caved because this community doesn't understand that sometimes it's ok for a business to tell it's customers "No. We're not doing that." Because this community gets off on forever putting Bungie in no-win situations. And this community doesn't understand that this game has attracted the attention of multiple genres of players - RPGers, MMOs, Shooters, PvPers, Casuals, etc - and no change is going to be universally liked. Deal with it.
The greatest words I ever heard to sum Destiny up in one were from a very clever guy, he said
GAME DESTINY JA DOES YEARS I DO NOT HAVE ANY HEAVY WEAPON OF THE YEAR 1 JA MAKES THE END OF CROTA AND CRYSTAL CAMERA VARIOUS AND SEVERAL TIMES AND NEVER CAME A HEAVY WEAPON, WANTED A LOT TO GJALLARHORN, MORE TO PRA DESISTI BECAUSE SHE NEVER COMES, PRISON OF THE ANCIENTS YEAR 1 I JUST DID SEVERAL TIMES ALSO AND NOW NOTHING THAT GAME TA SACANAGEM WITH MY FRIENDS JA HAVE THE HEAVY WEAPONS OF THE YEAR 1 AND I HAVE NO STILL THAT SACK BUNGIE IMPROVES TO MY REWARDS .... Edited by CrudeDude: 3/25/2017 1:45:57 AMBest thing I ever heard was from the nurse lady who delivered me when I was born. Granted I don't actually recall it. The legend goes like this: I was born with a bigger schlong than most fully grown adult males. No, this isn't a joke. Apparently she gasped, and went on about how I was going to make all the ladies happy when I grow up, and the doctor will have an easy time with my circumcision. Now when I was old enough to be told the story, I actually found it a little creepy some old lady was talking about me as a newborn like that. That being said, she was right, and it was probably the greatest thing ever uttered in the presence of my ears. This simple fact has changed my life. You have no clue how great it is. Sometimes a burden, but overall, I wouldn't trade it in for all the money in the world.

Just make Destiny 2 PS4 Exclusive. That way we don't have a shit console holding it back.
-
TL;DR
-
They never made any Y1 weapon irrelevant. VoG weapons still are the best choice to use playing VoG and the same for Crota. They did not need to be above 170LL for there relevant activities.
-
I think i'm at the end of my Destiny experience. Vanilla and NEVER completed a full raid from start to finish. Hopefully the clamour to get "new" loot will let a lone wolf enjoy a raid or two with a newly joined clan, or some decent players, who do not need a specific weapon or emblem for me to join.
-
True stuff . although I hated the grind I loved it once I got my weapon or gear and to strut it around in crucible for shits and giggles .
-
Totally agree with you ! I've been saying the same things for ages to. It's a completely disappointment to what Destiny was, to actually what it became...

As a player from the beta i'm going to have to disagree with what most of what was said. Year 1 isn't some glorious era that Bungie trampled over. Year 1 was a barren waste land full of missed potential and imbalance. If anyone want's to point the finger of blame on who "ruined" destiny the only people that should be pointed at is the community. Yes. Bungie had a hand in things. But a lot of their decisions were fueled by community feedback. And yes. there were some things Bungie chose to do on their own. But I would still blame the community if anything. His/her whole post is pure nostalgia. They talk about the glory of end game in vanilla. Really? Forever 29. Or how about the fact that the hardest content in vanilla wasn't important to pvp. Or a majority of pve either. Something that still reigns true today. Hell we didn't even get worthy looking armor for completing Raids until triumph came around. THAT is what raid armor should look like. Nightfalls were difficult back then NOT because we were sent to orbit (that's artifical fluff. get over yourself) nightfalls were scary/difficult because we were new as was our power. as more content came out we became more powerful in game. Even if Bungie brought back OG nightfalls we'd still stomp through them like we do today. I hardly call the grind for the vex worth it. It's my favorite gun in the game. But it was clearly overpowered. even if we restored it to it's OG form now it would still be too strong. it was nerfed before a majority of the players could even taste how strong it truly was. I really doubt this poster even had it pre nerf. The rest of the grind I already touched on. forever 29. It's a hard pill to swallow. But when games bring new content out. Generally old content isn't relevant anymore. Destiny had the right setup. the right model. They just lacked the depth/amount of content to make it work. And I really doubt that people would have embraced it then. Since destiny is an fps after all. We're getting what we wanted with triumph. old content is finally brought up. And it isn't enough. people are already saying "what's the point?" Let me clue you in. Even if content stayed relevant through out destiny it wouldn't be enough. people would still complain about not enough content. And doing the most difficult content still wouldn't mean anything. since being max light has never been meaningful. At this point that particular complaint is just a hollow excuse to dig at Bungie. Just going to point out that Trials was 100% a community demanded thing. Yeah. Bungie did mess up by making a lot of balance changes around trials. But those are again changes made from community demand. I remember specifically arguing against Trials because this game is clearly not that level of competitive. Look where we ended up? Also. I grinded my arse off to get a perfect rolled felwinters. and I wasn't sad to see it go. Year 1 ended with exotic handcannons being the only relevant primary, shotguns that could snipe you. and tracking rockets. And forget trying to nail one of the pub stars when they could just blink/slide so fast that you couldn't land a shot. Am I saying all balance changes pre TTK were good? No. But it certainly was far from this perfect picture the poster paints. In my opinion Destiny was near perfect (in terms of balance) right after TTK dropped and Bungie made balance changes to each subclass. You want my opinion? This poster is clearly just upset over the time/money they invested. and instead of acknowledging any good that was done they decided to shame the hell out of Bungie. they clearly are just running on nostalgia. You want to know how destiny 2 will really do well? All they have to do is keep pve and pvp seperate, make sure pve has more depth (and it's in game,) and add more depth to it's RPG elements. Destiny 1 was made into a primary FPS game due to the worry that it wouldn't be accessible enough to the masses. The entirety of Destiny 1 can be seen as flawed because of this. All Bungie really has to do is make sure the RPG elements of the franchise come first this time around.

While Destiny still has many small problems I'd still say that it's better than any of it's competitors. Dozens of big releases have come and gone and still Destiny is just as big as it's always been. I'm no fanboy and I'll openly accept that Destiny has it's problems, and those problems need addressing. However, there's a reason that we're still playing Destiny. It's important to accept that while Destiny has a lot of small things wrong, Bungie got even more right.

Not the best thing ever said. Nostalgia is alright. But it's not the best thing ever said. Community is partly to blame. When the game came out, elitism began to emerge by asking fireteam members to join only if you have specific weapons and gear with you. That is not why Bungie created this game. Yes, the game becomes less taxing if you have certain weapons or gear with you. But the game could be totally beaten even without these certain weapons or gear. I didn't get the Gjallarhorn until the last quarter of year 1. But it did not stop me from playing and beating all the end game content. Imagine beating Skolas without Gjallarhorn. Imagine how hard trying to get a team or join a team for Skolas and you don't have that gun. I can say I did that. That to me is how you become Legend. Becoming "Legend" in this game is not about the gun or having a Gjallarhorn. It's playing and finishing it even though you don't have it. I got the Vex Mythoclast on my first hard mode run, but I never used it to finish a raid or even use it in PvP. I prefer other guns to use. I used to invite anybody in my team to do Crota. Even the guys that don't have tracking rockets. And we would still beat Crota on hard. And I don't even have Gjallarhorn at that time. It's about people who wants to do it even if the odds are against them. If everyone works together as a team and sometimes willing to follow suggestions that have worked before, that's how you become "Legend" in this game. Becoming "Legend" is not just about getting stronger because you have a Gjally or a Mythoclast. It's also about doing better without them. Lastly, when you have time, read other comments below that disagree with this post. Some of their comments make sense.

Edited by Unforgiven: 3/25/2017 12:39:21 AMI dunno about you, but me and my friends cheesed the Nightfall every time. Be it sit under the stairs on Valister arric or sit in the outside room on Phogoth, or sniping the Archon Priest from the top with icebreaker. And being sent to orbit forced us to play it so that it wasn't an enjoyable experience. Every time it was some kind of cheese. Please don't mistake lack of content for fun. Year 1 was terrible. People just hold it in high regard because of nostalgia. Did anyone forget the loot cave, for 3 days we sat outside patrol farming engrams just so we can be viable for Vault of Glass. Noone wanted to actually run strikes, because the rewards was so bad. Now the game actually gives you loot when you play it.

this is stupid

Been playing Destiny since Alpha and I still do. I've experienced everything this game has had to offer but I can only partially agree with this post. Vanilla Destiny had a terrible storyline, too many questions were left unanswered and in turn just made the overall game feel unfinished. Still, I have much more memories of the early days with my friends than I do now. I can honestly even say that Crucible was fun. Fast foward post Rise of Iron, I play solo. I can't be bothered to even raid at all because of how tedious it can be. Trials is a sweat fest narrowed down to the smallest percentage of players still playing it. Microtransactions up the ass and Bungie removes special ammo thinking they're doing us a favor. Don't get me wrong, there are aspects of this game that I love. Improvements such as kiosks and material vendors. Changes to the interface, even some weapon and gear changes. But Bungie is incapable of putting out a single update without a flaw. Is it really that hard to bring back special ammo or put out a DLC with more than four story missions? What about Vault Space or Vault management? Maybe revert Trials to it's original state while you're at it or reduce the wins to seven so people can stop asking for carries? No, instead we get a special ammo nerf and an event to hold us over til' Destiny 2 in which none of the gear passes over. But hey here are some more microtransactions!
-
Nope, just nostalgia hitting someone too hard.

*LONG POST ALERT!* Destiny in it self ruined me. I played the game for two years until I realized that I WANTED the game to crash and burn. That the next patch would finally put myself and others over the edge and quit the darn game. Destiny became a chore and none of my friends (the ones who made Destiny special) all left. Eventually, I got a PS4 (was on Xbox 360) and decided not to buy Destiny. I wasn't going to let it ruin me anymore. From that point on, I stopped playing completely. I never wanted to become a person that wanted franchises to fail, but Destiny turned me into that. I still no longer have faith in the Destiny series and am still willing to bet that Destiny 2 is going to be another letdown. Bungie has drilled into me the idea that they don't care about me and only want money, so I won't care about their game. Not anymore. The point of my story is yes, Destiny was fun. WAS fun. But to me, Bungie killed it with a the start of something called Year 2. Now, I live happily playing Overwatch and Horizon Zero Dawn (which has more story in a cutscene than Destiny had in its entire lifespan) on playstation.
