Ping is a good tool to prove basic connectivity, and a very very rough guide to the quality of the link from your PC to the end node. ie its good for "is it up" situations.
tracert will tell you where in the network a node is down. and basic guide to network saturation.
You are connecting your network across your ISP, to another network that may be faster or slower than your ISP. I have never used a VPN for gaming and I am not an expert in Video Conferencing (same router tech and QoS required for this as gaming), so I don't really know the end result here.
