The original meta was horrible.
Everyone would only use auto rifles, which could kill you from what now is scout rifle distance. You seriously needed a SUROS regime to compete.
You probably never played back then if you think it was good. The game was ruined by Bungie when they started firing people before launch and we got a shell of a game.

The vanilla meta was by far the best. Autos weren't a problem until Xur sold Suros (which as an individual gun was stupidly op)
