If somebody adds you as a friend on PSN/XBL then they automatically become followers

It doesn't matter how many followers you have. It does nothing

But why do people follow me? And what does it do to them?

People follow you if they really like a post or topic you made. I think It doesn't do anything but show a blue cover across part of the icon, automatically open up media from them when you come across it, and allows you to find their profile from a menu. (This is all on mobile)
