[spoiler]Is edit: Get this, he was also a teacher, but had to quit his job because the students reminded him too much of his own children, who were tragically killed in a car accident only 2 years earlier. Destiny was the only thing that kept him going. Collecting those flakes became a metaphor for putting together the pieces of his shattered life. He thought that by completing the raid, he could finally move on.. He also has terminal cancer, and the previous two weeks were the last he is expected to live.
