Yes, obviously, it is possible to counter a GG. Just like it is possible to counter anything. But the vast majority of times the situation that you mentioned will be what happens, you manage to do some damage to him but he then kills you and moves on to his next victim. Even if he gets killed by the second guy he still got at least 1 kill with ease.
