Charlemagne's vault was where the defunct warmind of Mars was located, a crazy guardian aligned with the Cabal to slow the vex and prepare a base to attack the hive on the moon. Doing the strike against them was the original way we were to get Thorn, before the writer left and everything went duct tape.

How do we know this. Where could you read the writings. Before the writer left ?

A lot of the stories were teased in articles before the break. Every single exotic had its own backstory, now how defined and to what extent it was actually finished, who knows. This was in the same timeframe that "if you can see it, you can go there" was being trumpeted, and we see where we are with that lol
