(For Clarification, the tribe of central Mexico that every one refers to as Aztec are actually called the Mexica. They were a splinter group of the larger Aztec Tribe that lived further north.) It seems to me that Bungie seems to be taking alot of inspiration from Mesoamerican, and specifically Mexica mythology. Two prime examples: the concept of dragons with feathers and the gun Tlaloc. Tlaloc was a mesoamerican diety, God of Rain, Storms and underground water systems (the Mexica belived these were paths to the world of the dead.) This diety was so important to them that of the two main temples in their capital city, one was dedicated to Tlaloc. Quetzalcoatl was also a diety known as the Feather serpant. He was associated with light, morning, and the Morning Star. Also, according to legend, Quetzalcoatl created modern man in the age of the fifth sun (our current age) by infusing life into the bones of the races that came before us, and is responsible for giving the Mexica mais, which was and still is the staple food of Mexico. It strikes me as how similar Quetzalcoatl seems to be to the traveler, with infusing life(light) into the bones of those before us. Also, the link of dragons with the traveler also reinforces this idea to me. Edit: also, in the fragments, the light is refered to as the sky. Quetzalcoatl is also sometimes refered to as the god of the sky, the one that see rates earth from the heavens, and is associated with the god of wind. Something to note: if indeed Bungie is drawing from Mexica mythology, then I would expect for references to the war and sun god, Huitzilopochtli, to be made. Huitzilopochtli was the Principal diety of the Mexica, who guided them once they broke away from the Larger Aztec Tribe to what is today modern day Mexico City. He gave them a sign of an eagle eating a snake, while on a cactus on an island in the middle of Lake Texcoco. That island is where they built their capital city. Tenochitlan.
