The average age of video gamers is getting up there now (guessing around mid 20s), so I could see it anyway.
It's a cultural thing though. The American one gives the air of a stoic albeit comedic hero, while the Japanese one is more all around over the top (in terms of acting) and wanting his friends to play the game.
Even just Japanese ads vs. American ads in general are vastly different.
Even when I went to Europe, French and Italian ads weren't afraid to show more female skin for stuff as simple as mayonnaise.
