I'm just going off mmos I have played and in general when an expansion comes out you get new content, new level cap, and that means new gear. I personally wouldn't want to keep the gear I got previously. Half the fun for me at least is the hunt for new gear. That thrill at the end of the nightfall or raid of seeing an exotic pop up. But that's just me, everyone is different.
