Hey everyone, I really appreciate all of the feedback! It was great to hear a lot of real opinions, suggestions, and information about both systems. It was a lot of reading last night / this morning to catch up on everything, but I feel WAY more informed than before.
I made this post to get some information to help me make a good decision on a new console and I think with all of your help it did. Didn't make this to troll/start a huge debate on here, but I guess it comes with the territory on a forum where people are passionate about their gaming systems.
I made a random decision yesterday and pre-ordered the TTK PS4. I have enough store credit from previous trade ins at GameStop to make it affordable. Also will be trading in my 360 for an additional $100 off. So it looks like I will be starting from scratch, but I have enough friends on the PS+ network to make it fun.
Again, I really appreciate all of the feedback/suggestions/opinions from you guys. It was a great read and I think I learned all I needed to make the right decision for myself.
Also, thanks for all of the congratulations on me becoming a dad. Although I am still about 6 months out from having that new little one in my arms, I couldn't be more excited about it.
Thanks again, guardians.

I've had a Xbox 360 for a few years now and most of my friends either have a Xbox One or a PS4 (it's about a 50/50 split). I recently found out that I am going to be a dad (due late January 2016) and because of this and all of the future late nights that come with that in my future, I got permission from the wife to upgrade, so help me figure out what to get.
Since I am already a Microsoft user, obviously going with the Xbox One seems like the easiest one to upgrade to, but I'm open to suggestions.
For the Xbox, I am already familiar with the Xbox Live stuff and I'm already paying the yearly online fee, no need to cancel service etc.
If I upgrade to the Xbox One, do I need to start over with new characters or would my character carry over?
Is the Xbox One backwards compatible with my current 360 games (Destiny, Halo Series, GTA5) or do I have to buy new games no matter what?
Any other benefits to sticking with Microsoft?
As for the PS4, I don't have too much knowledge about this system. I've heard it's got better graphics, but I've also heard the online servers are unreliable leaving you unable to play often? Is it worth it? What other reasons make it worth switching?

Buy both. Problem Solved.

A year ago I would've said ps4 simply because of the price difference. $100 is a lot to me, no matter how much I make. Now I would say get the Xbox one. They have some pretty awesome bundles for good prices you can find and the xbone offers more especially with the backwards compatibility. I have a ps4 and today I'd rather have an xbone
-
Why not both?

Edited by Creasey: 7/9/2015 9:10:36 PMFor the most part, it comes down to which controller you find more comfortable, what your mates play on, and which exclusives you like better. PS4 is technically better when it comes to hardware, but it is so small and negligible that it really doesn't matter. For me, I have no interest whatsoever in Halo since after Halo 3, no interest in Gears of War, or pretty much any Xbone exclusive. PS4 so far has been absolutely great, with exclusives I love (Such as Bloodborne, Last of Us, etc). I also very much enjoy the simplistic yet sharp menu screen. I used to have a 360 and PS3, and Xbox's UI menu was just so bloody clunky looking and filled with advertisements (Not sure if this is still an issue with Xbone). Again, this is just my opinion, of what I enjoy.

I would say Xbox one. Your destiny content will carry over and any Xbox live you already purchased. As for being backwards compatible, that is coming this winter. Not sure what's games are going to be available, but they said they are trying to get as many games as possible.

Edited by Munchlax: 7/9/2015 9:08:42 PMXbox one over all is an awesome entertainment system you get more bang for your buck. Playstation is a great gaming system, Better than the Xbox one that's my personal opinion though. I have both systems and use each differently. My ps4 rarely gets used unless I want to play an exclusive.i can use My Xbox as a home DVR. I can hook my cable box up to it. The kinect camera is worlds ahead of play stations.

Your stuff transfers to xb1 Other reasons: -Less downtime (PS4 servers literally go down every week, look it up) -Halo -The upcoming Xbox One updates to the dashboard that make it MUCH more responsive -All your friends are on xbox one because you had a 360 -PS makes you crowdfund games (wtf?) -Better controller -Doesn't sacrifice stable FPS for slightly better graphics (Xb1 and PS4 have nearly = capability)

I went from 360 to PS4. No regrets at all, love this thing. But if staying in the same console family matters, like staying with friends, not losing data and other downloadable stuff you have, I'd go Xbone. If you don't care that you're gonna lose a billion hours of playtime on Destiny like me, come to PS4 and play another billion hours on Destiny here.
-
If you want to solemnly play destiny PS4 is your console but if you want to enjoy real exclusives coming out this year and destiny common over to the ONE side ;)
-
I say get a one because you know your way around it and everything plus the Xbox One was ment to be a family friendly home entertainment console. That's my opinion I say you would get a lot out if it but that's me do what you want.

Edited by TheFlyingRocket: 7/9/2015 8:48:10 PMHey man me and all the guys I play with made the change from Xbox 360 to Ps4 before Destiny was released. The PS4 has it good sides and it's bad. The PS4 is a causal gamers console which is nice as you don't have as many hot headed people and most of the people I have made friends with are just here to have fun. Meanwhile it you are a competitive player you might want to stay on with you xbox because you will be playing with like minded people. Also every time PSN bring out an update it stuffs the destiny serves for some reason which is annoying. But it comes down to this also the PS4 has sold more then the xbox one. So in my opinion in the future the PS4 will have more games made for it, But Xbone has backwards compatible so it all depends if you want to start again or not.
-
Both are great systems but since you are already an xbox user , xbox one is the better option since you get to keep your purchases , games , all destiny progress, and xbox live subscription. And you have no problem since you have friends on xbox one
-
There will be backwards compatibility soon for Xbox one. Also your characters transfer over. I definitely recommend going Xbox one. They're updating soon to make the systems run faster too.
-
They are both the same, but you can buy the PS4 for Destiny exclusives or a Xbox One for Halo, a pretty good game.
-
If you upgrade to xbone your characters will carry over. That's enough reason. I personally stick with Sony, but that's just me.
-
Just throwing it out there, what you hear about PlayStation servers being down often is an overexaggeration
-
I have both and over all ps4 is goona be the better choice because of graphics, exclusives and stuff like that. The server think is total bull. They tell us when the servers are going to be down.
-
Backwards comparability is coming later this year so go Xbox one. You will save playing your older games plus you probably will enjoy them anyways since the old games are the best ones :)
-
There will be backwards compatibility coming soon for Xbox 1.
-
On Xbox it is way easier to gather a fireteam.
-
Everyone acts like psn is down half of the time, its not, it goes down more the Xbox live but you know it is OK to take a break and do something else.

Trust me, based on what you said, go with Xbox One. Your destiny characters will carry over. Most people just see your title and come in blindly spouting nonsense of what their console of choice is. You will be a lot happier with Xbox One.
-
As an owner of both, I personally prefer the ps4. It has superior, more reliable hardware. Xbox has the better online service. If you're playing Destiny on 360, and it's a significant factor in your decision, stick with xbox. Your entire account and all progress can transfer to the One. You can continue using your account between both systems as you choose (since 360 players can't play with One and vice versa).

Edited by Marson: 7/9/2015 8:57:04 PMEven though I'm on ps4 and will probably never change to an Xbox it sounds like the Xone is the best choice for you. Talking about destiny you won't need to start over. Some content will release together with TTK which was exclusive to Ps (worst decision in the first place) Xone is a great console. Maybe your wife will enjoy all the multi media possibilities too.

No man's sky. Ps4 and pc only. That should be reason enough
