Hey everyone, I really appreciate all of the feedback! It was great to hear a lot of real opinions, suggestions, and information about both systems. It was a lot of reading last night / this morning to catch up on everything, but I feel WAY more informed than before.
I made this post to get some information to help me make a good decision on a new console and I think with all of your help it did. Didn't make this to troll/start a huge debate on here, but I guess it comes with the territory on a forum where people are passionate about their gaming systems.
I made a random decision yesterday and pre-ordered the TTK PS4. I have enough store credit from previous trade ins at GameStop to make it affordable. Also will be trading in my 360 for an additional $100 off. So it looks like I will be starting from scratch, but I have enough friends on the PS+ network to make it fun.
Again, I really appreciate all of the feedback/suggestions/opinions from you guys. It was a great read and I think I learned all I needed to make the right decision for myself.
Also, thanks for all of the congratulations on me becoming a dad. Although I am still about 6 months out from having that new little one in my arms, I couldn't be more excited about it.
Thanks again, guardians.

I've had a Xbox 360 for a few years now and most of my friends either have a Xbox One or a PS4 (it's about a 50/50 split). I recently found out that I am going to be a dad (due late January 2016) and because of this and all of the future late nights that come with that in my future, I got permission from the wife to upgrade, so help me figure out what to get.
Since I am already a Microsoft user, obviously going with the Xbox One seems like the easiest one to upgrade to, but I'm open to suggestions.
For the Xbox, I am already familiar with the Xbox Live stuff and I'm already paying the yearly online fee, no need to cancel service etc.
If I upgrade to the Xbox One, do I need to start over with new characters or would my character carry over?
Is the Xbox One backwards compatible with my current 360 games (Destiny, Halo Series, GTA5) or do I have to buy new games no matter what?
Any other benefits to sticking with Microsoft?
As for the PS4, I don't have too much knowledge about this system. I've heard it's got better graphics, but I've also heard the online servers are unreliable leaving you unable to play often? Is it worth it? What other reasons make it worth switching?

Go xbox one because you can transfer your character if you do ps4 you will loose your stuff

Edited by Combo164: 7/10/2015 1:07:44 AMI'd say xbox one. Your characters transfer over plus you don't have to pay for another subscription since you'd already have xbox live. And yes the visuals are technically better on ps4 but they aren't by much. You'd need a magnifying glass and be viewing games side by side to actually see the difference. However, if you'd like a change of things go with ps4. But tbh, once again I'd say just go xbox. Oh and congrats.

XB1. Backwards compatibility Progress saves All around entertainment system
-
Always stay with the family console always no matter what
-
Go for Xbone just because everything transfers. Unless your friends move to PS then do that.
-
Microsoft just announced at this year's e3 that xbox one would be backwards compatible. your character and gamertag will also carry over so no need to get rid of your gamertag and all the achievements. I'm upgrading to xbox one for my birthday on July 25th. I can't wait!

Xbox one for the easy transfer. Dad hood takes up a lot of time
-
Specifically for the fact that you're already on 360 I'd get a one, so let me clarify a few things: DLC's transfer, all you have to do is go to the store on the ONE and redownload them at no additional price Destiney's Characters DO transfer: you will keep your character without having to anything special, just load up the game like normal HOWEVER If you're not buying specifically for destiny then just pick which one has better (in your opinion) games
-
Whichever console you have more friends one
-
I'd say in your case you should stick with the Xbox, since it's what you know and you won't need to start over again. don't worry about specs, worry about what you'll be happier with
-
Seeing as your friends, guardian, and gaming history is on xbox, go with the x1. My friends and i all made the decision one night in party chat on 360 that we were swapping primary consoles to ps4 this gen and havent looked back. Some of us have x1s as well for exclusives, and i really really enjoy it a my one box to rule my entertainment center via the excellent xbox media remote. Essentially my consoles this gen just swapped places. No harm either way you go, but solid theory is go where your games are, and if your more a 3rd party gamer, go where your friends are and you will never be unhappy.

Have a Xbox one, unless you want halo, go ps4
-
Personally, I like playstation but both are good consoles
-
For a long time I was someone who was an avid Xbox only player when the original and 360 released. However last year I switched to PS4. Partially because Xbox just had a terrible conference before the One's release and because a lot of my friends were switching. That being said I honestly think it depends on personal preference these days. Yes there are some PS4 and Xbox exclusives but not that much. I do love my PS4 and what it offers me. You just have to decide if sticking with Xbox will be worth it or will it be better to switch to PS4?

Xbox because PSN sucks.

1st, congrats on becoming a dad. I've only been a dad to four hamsters, a couple fish, a bearded dragon, and a pug, but it's close enough...right? 2nd, your honest question started a console war. Shows what a community we've got here. I almost wish Destiny was PS4 exclusive just to stop these ridiculous nerd fights (and I play on Xbox). 3rd, get the Xbox. You don't have to start your progress over (that right there should be reason enough), plus all the good reasons you named. The controller and UI are a bit odd at first but you get used to it and if you go back to the 360 it feels like such a step backwards. The performance gains with PS4 are there, but there's not a person on this planet who can tell between 1080p and 900p while playing the game. Maybe with a screenshot and analyzing every pixel. Idk, people grasp whatever they can to justify their purchase. Side note, Xbox will be getting DirectX 12 soon. It won't effect Destiny, but it should be a considerable boost in performance (15-20%) in the future. The dev team for Project Cars on their forums has been very open about it and its pretty cool.

Characters will carry over
-
Keep going with Xbox You already got a account You're familiar with it Plus I heard you have better online service You keep your progress so you don't have to start over But I also heard current gen isn't compatible with old gen games So I heard I'm on ps3 so if course I'm gonna upgrade to ps4 because I'm familiars with playstation.

It really depends on what you and your friends prefer don't let others opinions change what you want. Since you asked though I suggest PS4 I've been Xbox for 10 years and made the switch to PS4 coz that's what my friends got. Best decision I've ever made. The controller is better than the 360's which was my favourite controller until now (personal opinion). My main PS4 game is destiny and PlayStation gets all the exclusives for destiny. Every pre release video or reveal I saw had Sony shat all over Microsoft and I didn't personally agree with a few things Microsoft chose to do with the Xbone. The only down side is that PSN is far inferior to Xbox live. It crashes ALL THE FRICKIN TIME!!!!!. I remember Xbox live crashing once in the 6 years I used it and Microsoft was all over it like a rash. I've lost count how many times PSN has crashed in the last year and Sony seems to have no idea what they are doing with it. Charging the same rate for a sub par service is annoying but that's the only con for me. Oh and missing out on Forza Horizon but Destiny has my attention : )

Xbox just released they are making lists for backwards compatibility. So just cuz it's not now doesn't mean it won't be. PS already said they have no future plans for this whatsoever. You already have a live account so all that switches. As for your saves, we best thing I can tell you is get an external hard drive for that and save it all on there. Sony is a hardware company, they do the best processors and such, but Microsoft is a software company, everything links with it. Computer and so on. I've always been an xbox guy even though none of my friends are, and I'll never look back.
-
First, yes it transfers over. Graphics are the same on both consoles. And not to sure about backwards compatibilty so far, I need more information. But you can family share on xbox one which if your wife woukd play, you could create her account. She would therefore get all digital downloads like games and dlc you buy this saving buying a another game and Xbox subscription. But if you want exclusives for destiny then ps4. That would be my only reason. But good luck.

Edited by thefrentos: 7/10/2015 3:38:25 AMbackwards compatibility will introduce an emulator for the one. in other words, youll basically be playing 360 on the one. if you stick to the 360 destiny disk, youll be playing on 360 servers and wont be playing with guys on the one. either way, you wont be restarting progress. id say, go with the one, but look into picking up the xbox one version of your games if you want to play with people on the one servers.
-
I think X1 would be an awesome choice. I grew up with Xbox/Microsoft and basically everyone I knew had one. I guess is which console has more friends (or friends that you play with most)
-
I did the same thing and went with the One from a 360. The best part is that if you own a destiny digital edition, you get the Xbox one version for free, and all your characters and gear move over as well (you can even play across consoles if you keep your 360). If you didn't get the digital edition, but bought the game at a retailer, you will have to buy the base game for the one, but the DLC, characters, and gear will still move over as they are tied to your LIVE account. So that is a big reason to stay on the same platform family. Also, your XBOXLive subscription will work on both consoles. The only (Destiny related) reason to go PS4 would be if you really want the exclusive DLC they are getting in year 2 (we're getting the year one "exclusives" with TTK, apparently). The down side is you will have to re-buy the whole game and rebuild new characters. No gear transfers either. It was a no brainier for me. I got the One. Also, the new XB1 "Elite" controller looks like it will be amazing. Just my $0.02.

Ultimately it is up to you. Do your research on each console with respect to console specific features and games. I made the mistake of choosing the PS4 too quickly. While they have some great titles, I miss being able to play the Halo franchise.

Get the console that more of your friends play on.
