Hey everyone, I really appreciate all of the feedback! It was great to hear a lot of real opinions, suggestions, and information about both systems. It was a lot of reading last night / this morning to catch up on everything, but I feel WAY more informed than before.
I made this post to get some information to help me make a good decision on a new console and I think with all of your help it did. Didn't make this to troll/start a huge debate on here, but I guess it comes with the territory on a forum where people are passionate about their gaming systems.
I made a random decision yesterday and pre-ordered the TTK PS4. I have enough store credit from previous trade ins at GameStop to make it affordable. Also will be trading in my 360 for an additional $100 off. So it looks like I will be starting from scratch, but I have enough friends on the PS+ network to make it fun.
Again, I really appreciate all of the feedback/suggestions/opinions from you guys. It was a great read and I think I learned all I needed to make the right decision for myself.
Also, thanks for all of the congratulations on me becoming a dad. Although I am still about 6 months out from having that new little one in my arms, I couldn't be more excited about it.
Thanks again, guardians.

I've had a Xbox 360 for a few years now and most of my friends either have a Xbox One or a PS4 (it's about a 50/50 split). I recently found out that I am going to be a dad (due late January 2016) and because of this and all of the future late nights that come with that in my future, I got permission from the wife to upgrade, so help me figure out what to get.
Since I am already a Microsoft user, obviously going with the Xbox One seems like the easiest one to upgrade to, but I'm open to suggestions.
For the Xbox, I am already familiar with the Xbox Live stuff and I'm already paying the yearly online fee, no need to cancel service etc.
If I upgrade to the Xbox One, do I need to start over with new characters or would my character carry over?
Is the Xbox One backwards compatible with my current 360 games (Destiny, Halo Series, GTA5) or do I have to buy new games no matter what?
Any other benefits to sticking with Microsoft?
As for the PS4, I don't have too much knowledge about this system. I've heard it's got better graphics, but I've also heard the online servers are unreliable leaving you unable to play often? Is it worth it? What other reasons make it worth switching?

Shitty online service for days funny thing is there is a petition going on for better online services XD and overheating issues not much of exclusives & no backwards compatibility and believe me all the people saying it has higher graphics in real term it's 10% more powerful than xbone all the negative points for 10% powerful console you choose
-
I dont know what games the ps4 has but when your kid gets older he or she might want to play after watching you and I think the xbone has more childrens games.
-
Simple, "exclusives aren't ending anytime soon." You make the move guardian.
-
If u wanna be hacked and not be able to play because psn is down then buy a ps4
-
You look nice today

I have both and have to say I'm on X1 way more. That's not to start a war or that there is anything wrong with PS 4. The friends list I had from 360 is a major part. With backwards compatibility coming by the end of the year that's another plus for the 360 games you have.

Edited by TheKumarEffect: 7/10/2015 5:33:24 AMIf you like having the extra PvE content than PS4. If you like actually playing the game 6-7 days a week than Xbox
-
I'm a new daddy too! I work late so I am on Xbone around midnight CST
-
Go to PS4 more exclusives! Like Monte Carlo and Hawkmoon and more also even mor ein the new Taken king DLC
-
Get the X1 for multiple reasons. 1. All your characters will transfer 2. Backwards compatibility 3. You're having a kid so the ability to hook up your television up to it will be pretty useful (someone tell me is ps4 can do the tv thing because I have no idea hahaha) 4. (Personal preference) X1 controller feels better. Ps4 controller feels a bit flimsy Not being biased both the X1 and Ps4 are amazing consoles each with their own perks. I'm actually saving up money to buy a Ps4. Any suggestions on what model of ps4 and games for it?

You should get an etheric light

See it as a option not a necessary thing to do

Pc masterrace.

I prefer ps, but in this situation stick to xbox. Getting your characters re leveled would be a pain.

A long time ago, I had to decide between PS or Xbox. I had both, but only wanted one. The disc format war of bluray vs HD disc helped me decide to go with the PS3. The Xbox yearly pass was also a negative influence, but if it meant better online play, then great. But it wasn't a deciding factor back then. I voted for PS4, but if your vested in Xbox, go with it. Backwards compatibility is a great thing. :). And have fun with the staggered sleep cycle.

Edited by SortaSteve: 7/10/2015 5:29:22 AMFirst and foremost get what your friends have. Playing with friends is the most important. Secondly your poll is a bad idea. This forum is filled with fan boys from each group and not knowledgeable players sadly. (At least not the #destiny forums you would probably get better results under #offtopic) If that doesn't matter get a PS4. It literally has better hardware than the xbox 1 so as games develop more and more the ps4s performance will be much better for graphics etc. Personally I, along with all my gaming friends, switched from xbox to Playstation on this gen of consoles because of the hardware. I can only say I would honestly never go back. No only does psn seem to be better than xbl was for me (way less party drops and game crashes) but the free games every month are ridiculous. Last month was almost $80 or stuff and already this month we have another $65 worth of free games. Edit: when it comes to online service people say PSN is down more but honestly it's not. The take more safety stuff into consideration for stuff like ddos attacks (example: last Xmas when PSN and xbl went down xbl went back up as fast as they could but had off and on problems. PSN purposely stayed down to stop and future tampering or chance of a further/real hacking) if you follow play stations Twitter accounts they give you warnings for maintenance like bungie does for updates. Any questions feel free to ask me.

Id say Ps4. You get more perks out of it, a lot simpler, and frankly, I've noticed people are really friendly on PlayStation

Edited by YxolloxY: 7/10/2015 5:22:54 AMI suppose in your case the xbox one would make more sense... on a ps4 myself and I also have an x360; but I never had a live gold membership I doubt characters carry over between ms / sony since they are bound to your live / psn accounts afaik the ps4 doesn't really have better graphics than the xbone; the differences are pretty marginal. although if you look at it objectively the ps4 has SLIGHTLY better specs (only in the memmory department though) the only real reason to make a choice between the 2 is title exclusivity... in that department ps4 does have a bit of an edge imo.

Edited by DaCannonnn: 7/10/2015 5:20:18 AMI have an Xbox One and I would say go for the PS4. I have an Xbox because it's where all my friends are, but if it's about the better console, so far it's PS4. Personally I like how a lot of the Sony exclusive games look: Bloodborne, No Mans Sky, and the game with the robot dinosaurs they showed off at E3. Also, so far every game that comes out on both systems has the better running version in the PS4. Also, Destiny exclusives would be nice. The Xbox will have some backwards compatibility, which is cool, but not necessary if you keep your 360. It'll be cool to be able to record and take screen shots of 360 games with the One, though.
-
on the xbox one your dlc and characters will carry over but you will need to buy the game again which is only $20 right now, you should also check each game for backwards compatibility because some can do it and some cant

I have both and like both, but personally in your situation I'd go for the one because of the smoother transition and the fact that everything you've done in destiny is interchangeable with the 360.
-
Get the one most of your friends have.
-
The graphics are really the same. As are the consoles. However your account(including gold) will transfer over to the Xbox one. Also there's a lot more awesome stuff coming to the One, like Backwards compatibility and mods for Fallout 4.
