Are social experiments valid and representative, a pretext for driving social or political activism, or an exploitative scheme for fame and money?

Watch some of these, or even just read the titles, and tell me what you think.
[spoiler]I think they are exploitative. For example, every video I've seen involving extremes of classes juxtaposes a supposedly good-natured homeless person with middle/upper class folk in various situations and ends up presenting the latter as apathetic or snobbish. Not only that, but I think they're inherently exploitative to the subjects of the "experiments", because it's their reactions (or non reactions) which are being used by the authors of these experiments as "evidence" to drive the underlying cause.
Furthermore, when coupled with the fact that they're often posted on YouTube, they come across as simply being a pretext for entertainment value, consequently exploiting a given issue for a poster's own benefit: popularity, views, and money.[/spoiler]

The one's on youtube do it for fame and money, people who actually do something with the data they collect are valid.

Very often these experiments are doctored for the sake of furthering some ideal or cause. Ambush feminism is one of the worst offenders.

Usually they are done to see how a group of people reacts. In sociology its important to know how people react so that when we construct our future we know what will make society better. On the darker scale of this, knowing how people react can be used as a tool for manipulation in order for an individual to get what they want while taking advantage of people. It all depends on who is conducting the experiment.

The pursuit of science has always been for personal gain, be it of knowledge or technology or funding, therefore the focus on money does not surprise me. I must take note of the subtle activism taking place in these. It is a subtle indoctrination based upon limited input as a result of cherry picked videos. TLDR: it's both

That title has so many big words. Anyways, I believe that they can be a mixture of all 3, but on YouTube, mostly the latter 2. Social experiments as a whole aren't completely any of the 3 choices. I agree that many are exploitative, and tend to just go along with societal expectations, such as the rich and poor ones, and that most of them try to push an agenda, as the creator has to edit the videos and most likely cherry picks the parts that look the best. After all, a social experiment video that shows everybody acting the same way wouldn't be very exciting.

I generally feel that those conducting the experiment have a desire for a particular outcome and often ensure that the experiment reaches that outcome. If this is the case, it's completely anti-science.

At best, they have the ability to make the audience consider their own preconceptions, beliefs, and ask themselves "I can look at such an event and judge the people involved, but if I was "in the blind" and faced with a similar circumstance, would my actions/reactions be aligned more with my current judgement of others or would I disappoint myself?" At worst, they can be exploitative, cherry pick and edit in responses that make for "good viewing" or that are intended to create moral outrage and feelings of superiority in the audience. After all, the daytime TV shows that have controversial guests, "who is the father", people behaving badly, and even the mock courtroom shows are there so the audience can feel free to judge, feel better about themselves and decide that they are superior to someone else. And since that feels good, it sells and stays on the air.
