Oryx may himself be a dragon and/or all hive answer to dragons. The hive are heavily themed as medieval titles, also tricked out with sharp claws, horns, and sharp teeth. They also like to live in caves. They're armor features ancient bone like material. On the last Dark below story mission the final room features a lark skeleton, much like a long dragon. There is also an achievement labeled as "dragon slayer". It is also known through grimoire and exotic armor that dragons did once exist but were completely hunted out. Perhaps they weren't? The hive want revenge for the hunting of them and/or their gods. It is said that the hive prince Crota had multiple forms. The one we fought was not complete, he could not enter his dragon state. He is the son of the king of kings, the dragon oryx.

 • Dragonfly maybe. The hive are modeled after insects. It was never hinted that crota had multiple forms, nor that he could fly. Whatever you're taking, stop. Drugs are bad.

 • Never said he did turn into one. Read the grimoire, Crota has unknown forms, one of which is hinted towards flight. It is possible that he holds a dragon like power
