Its a belt as in belt fed machine gun. Whole things just vanishes when you fire the last bullet.
Edit: my bad!! Totally forgot I mentioned the ridiculous Scott rifle! I agree!

You make a good point about the machine guns too...where the hell do the rest of the bullets go?

I would assume their answer is something along the lines of "space magic". That's why this was my last dlc in the Destiny saga. I probably won't ever play again once no man's sky is released.
