I seldom get questions anymore. I'll be that guy again when E3 happens and I make my new Q&A thread though.
They know that the rings will kill us all but why?
They don't actually know this. They actually don't know what will happen exactly when Halo fires. They have translations, but those translations talk of cleansing and leading to a Great Journey.
Ive heard they think they will ascend into "gods"
They do. It actually follows a logical process on how they reached that conclusion. The San 'Shyuum revere the Forerunners as gods. They fired Halo, and are no longer in known space, and are now worshiped as gods. Therefore, firing Halo leads to god-hood.
also Is the great journey where the elites go to "heaven" in human terms?
Not exactly. Here is what the Covenant believe about Halo: Halo is the penultimate holy artifact in the Covenant Faith. Their understanding of it is that when it is fired, it releases cleansing energies that punish heretics, and imbue the faithful with divine energies. This would then start the Great Journey, the path to godhood.

So "heretics" are like "sinners" in a way?

A heretic is someone who is profoundly at odds with what is generally accepted.

Edited by AgentMizzmo: 6/1/2015 6:46:00 AMWell..... It's kind of.... They had a vague idea about what the Halo rings did, but they believed that firing them would send them on a "great journey" where they pass into paradise with the forerunners. Obviously, they were crazy sonuvabitches who deserves to die.
