Inspirations, yes. But just because something is inspired by something else, doesn't make the design correct. I can design a firearm based on any other firarm, and still get it wrong.
Fusion Rifles don't exist. They're pure fantasy. They work "just because". There is no real-world comparison to be made with something that doesn't exist. Implying that because something fantastical exists, that the design of something based on a real-world example is therefore allowed to exist even though it wouldn't work is a logical fallacy of some sort, I'm sure.
