For once, I have to agree with IGN(orant).
I understand why Bungie made Etheric Light so rare, and it's a two-fold reason.
1) They didn't want everyone hitting 34 in the first week. (Understandable)
2) The rarity is a delicate balance. Just rare enough that it entices you to play more, but not so rare that it seems to be like a second job in order to get even one piece of Etheric Light.
Unfortunately (as with the rest of the game until present), Bungie has no idea about how to properly balance the grind vs. reward ratio. They've hit the latter part of point 2. They've made the Etheric Light so rare that it is far too difficult and offered in far too little activities with far too little of a drop chance. They've made it such a chore to get, that for many people it is killing the drive to play now.
There's plenty of people in my situation. I've played for two weeks now and still haven't seen a single piece of Etheric Light drop.
Now; there are plenty of people who have three 34's, all weapons upgraded, and Etheric Light to spare. But Bungie missed the target audience on this one (unless their target audience is between the ages of 12-16, out of school with 16 spare hours to grind out that much Light...). Most people don't have the 10-12 hours at a pop to grind out Etheric Light to get all of their equipment upgraded in a week. Hell, most people don't even have that kind of free time on the weekends.
A possible fix would be to keep the guaranteed Etheric Light "gift" of the 34 and 35 Prison of Elders, but add in a drop chance for the small chests at the end of the 28 and 32 Prison runs. Increase the chance for a drop for the Nightfall and the Crucible (hell, add in a chance for a drop in the Crucible) as well as the Iron Banner once it starts up again. An increase of 10, 15, or even 20 percent along with the additional places to get it would make the grind much less agonizing overall, and would have the added effect of making people want to play more than they do now.
Making the Etheric Light the carrot at the end of the stick is one thing. But you've got to use a shorter stick. nobody will want the carrot if they can't even see it at the end of the stick.
As it stands right now, there's nothing in sight to chase after, and it just kills the desire to play.
Edit 1 (of what will probably be the first of several edits...): I fully know where to currently get Etheric Light, that's not the issue. the issue is the time it takes to get even one piece. Most people only have 2-3 hours to play per night. Therefore, most people find it very difficult to "do everything in all characters per week" like you kids on summer break are getting more than twelve hours to accomplish.
Edit 2: PvP isn't everyone's strong-suit, nor is so easy as "git gud skrub". Those of you who say "it's a cakewalk to go 9-0 in the trials and get 3 EL per character per week" should probably quit talking. You're only making yourselves look ignorant, not like the PvP-gods you think you are.
Edit 3: ironBill posted this, and he clarifies the intent of this post nicely.
FWIW, I couldn't care less about getting through ToO. Really, I'm finding I don't care about hitting 34 on all characters either. No point to it. Just so we know who we both are.
The OP is talking about play balance, and whether or not Bungie is hitting their market, which I happen to find is a great point. Who IS the demographic? Are they trying for a very select subset of skills to reward this time around? Sure seems that way. Good PvP players are strutting around like they invented fire... happy for 'em too I guess, but if that's all this DLC is intended to give us, my question follows - is that all there is to this?
Edit 4: Calling me a "scrub" doesn't do anything as I really don't care. All you're doing by slinging names like that is highlighting the lack of strength in your argument.
Edit 5: pablogordon had another great idea. I've quoted it here to give it some love.
There should have been an exchange rate at the speaker for Etheric light. Baffling really that it's not there.
Make it really expensive. The most expensive thing in the game currently is that ship from Petra at what, 17.5k glimmer? Make the Etheric light cost that plus one each of the radiants, and ten each of the ascendants, and some coins and motes for good measure. The speaker exchange was a very good step in the right direction to sinking some currencies, especially Friday when Xur sold the helm engrams and now that most everyone has a couple few weapons they want to re-roll.
Why not just add the Etheric light? If we are really honest, the point isn't just hitting max anymore (and thankfully so) but putting together a setup with both the perks and looks that suit your play style!
Edit 6: And, here's a link for why the PoE loot system is broken in general, but parallels well with the rarity of Ethereal Light.
http://www.forbes.com/sites/insertcoin/2015/05/28/destinys-prison-of-elders-has-a-serious-loot-problem/?utm_campaign=yahootix&partner=yahootix
Edit 7: FatChubbE offers a very good breakdown of what the responsible adult Gamer deals with in trying to overcome the base design of this DLC. It is an accurate description, and props go to him for it.
The adults I play this game with aren't always on. Three are full time Grad students with jobs, two are parents with wives and kids. My son plays between school and football practice and games when he's not doing chores or homework. The full time gamers in my clan have all partnered up, so getting help from them is difficult. The "it's easy" comments applies only to those with spare time. We did one nightfall and one 32 prison of elders. That's all we had time for. Don't get me wrong, the etheric light is there. It's obtainable. But it's not obtainable "easy". Easy when applied to time spent obtaining does not bode well for the working/school demographic. It applies only to destiny players who play destiny for hours on end every day. To put it into perspective we did (two) ToO matches. that's right 2. We were not in control of the time. With loading, and 5 round matches, two matches took an hour. If you do 8 and win flawlessly without the other team winning a single point, 3 hours at least grinding for an etheric light. If you add a 34 or 35 prison of elders and you're a super stud team that's another 2 hours with loading, game time, running back to the airlock. And 2 hours is giving you the benefit of the doubt that you're really really good. If you're average, add at least another hour or two. So the argument that it's "easy" is a matter of perspective. Easy as far as skill level? Or easy as a matter of "I got all the time I need to play?" Either way, getting etheric light takes more time than any other currency we've been offered thus far. That's just how it is. People took days off to play this. Which kind of gives you an idea of the commitment to time you have to invest to receive these "easy" rewards.
Edit 8: IIFormer GamerII also has a great take on the time sink necessary and the base design of these DLC.
You are without a doubt correct when it comes to grinding through the same content three times over in Destiny, and the annoyances, redundancy, sheer boredom, and time consumption that comes along with it. After playing through the base game and TDB I've come to realize that destiny simply isn't a game that can be played causally, and if you attempt to do so you should be prepared to put yourself at an extreme disadvantage. This was my main reason for intentionally skipping out on HoW, because I knew that the never ending grind would continue.
If you have a lot of spare time on your hands, Destiny is a great game to play with clan mates. But truth be told you cannot simply play destiny in a casual manner such as battlefield or call of duty, without hindering your progression dramatically and being seen as a "slacker," "leech," or a "freeloader."
Destiny's new loot looks nice, but I just can't take the grind anymore.
Edit 9: To all the people telling us that not everyone should be able to get to end-game content, or that parts of the game should be locked except for the "hardcore" crowd: So having entire portions of the game locked out to a player simply for no other reason than Bungie feeling the need to promote elitist alienation of their player base... is ok?
The only thing more wrong than Bungie's "philosophy" are the people who jump at any chance to support it.

I have 10 extras sitting in my vault, yeah i think maybe you should spend more time playing less complaining?

I am totally with you on this , I am a day one beta player , I am only average , and have a group of friends who I play with on a regular basis , Tuesday evening has become game night , we usually do night fall on all 3 toons , the. One Poe on 32 , I only have one of my characters up to 34 , and have only just got my first etheric light from IB , I know a couple of people who have had it drop from nightfall everyweek so far , so definitely too hard to obtain !! This release definitely appears more biased towards PVP . To upgrade all the bits and pieces I wanted to ascend will take 20+ etheric light !! If I got one or 2 a week I would be happy , I just don't have the time to grind all the NF, weeklies and take on 34 POE at the moment ! Now I have a character at 34 and so do my friends we might do 34 POE instead of 32 .

Edited by Sarden: 6/7/2015 2:35:42 AMI have 7-8 sitting in my inventory and two 34s and no desire to have another, you're doing it wrong. Also I work 16 hour shifts, have a girlfriend and occasionally have this thing called a social life. If I can do it so can you and I roughly play 2-3 hours twice a week maybe. You get 2 from trials of Osiris, you get like 2 from prison of elders, you do prison of elders on two characters and that's 4 you do trials of Osiris with just 8 wins which is so easy and you get another 2. You're not trying hard enough, or you're just shit at the game and want things handed to you. Stop trying to make a game that is already so damn easy even easier people like you are a cancer to this community.
-
It's only rare if you steer away from top level activities in the game. In fact it's never been this easy to level up stuff in the game as it is now. And if you don't play HoW top level activities you shouldn't actually need Etheric Light.

Don't prattle ACT - leave

I have to DISAGREE. Lvl 34 PoE. Nightfalls. Lvl 35 PoE. Lvl 3 Iron banner. Lvl 5 Iron banner. 6th win of ToO. 8th win of ToO. Also probably going 9-0. Thats just off the top of my head. Thats per character per week.
-
To everyone that keeps explaining on how easy it is or where you can get it, I think he knows all that. I think what he's trying to say is, being able to play for set amount of time is very hard to obtain the certain gear or rewards to level everything up. Which I understand that, but remember we are only on week 3 of this dlc. If you only did the PoE on level 32 each week so far you would be a 33 1/2. That's without exotic armor. Throw a pair of boots in there and you would have a 34.. I see both sides. But if you play the right activities in the game you wouldn't, or I should say shouldn't have to hard of a time leveling up. Good luck, hang in there

Couldn't agree more. Anyone who doesn't agree is either still living at home with their parents, doesn't have a job and a family, or is still in college living of their parents teet.
-
2-3 hours per night so 14-21 hours per week and you cant beat the lvl 34 Poe?!?!? 2-3 hours a night IMO is Poe and nightfall for all characters with time to spare for trials on at least one character if not two-3
-
The average play time for destiny is over 3 hours a day which doesn't sound like a lot but that is comparable to WoW. Call of duty average play time per day is 38 minutes. Reason why destiny play time is so high cause there are more full time players. If bungie would change etheric light drops then all the full time players would have it way too easy just because bungie would cater to the minority.
-
First of all you destroy your own credibility and logic by implying that only kids/teens have the time to play. Secondly you have a WoT along with a 12minute video and another WoT in the form of Edits. Thirdly-time-1hr is all you need to beat 34, 2-3hrs are all you need to beat 35. 1/2hr is all you need to do nightfall. 1/2 hr is all you need to complete a trials run. Fourth you & those in your situation are not the majority of players. Fifth The reason it isn't as easy as 1-2-3 is because people already complain about things to do. Atleast if it's a little more engaging to to get to 34 players have to juggle activities if they don't have the time or they are more inclined to get out of their PvE or Pvp only bubble and crossover to play the rest of the game Sixth and most important. If you managed the events and your Etheric light properly within 2 weeks you should have had 3 characters at 34 with light to spare even if you had only a single hr per day. to play
-
Nope it's fine. If you can't obtain one then you must just suck...
-
I've gotten a few etheric light and I still have one because I can't really find something to use it on. When you turn 34 and get 2 guns you want upgraded then honestly that's about it.

Edited by SerDannoRanAway: 6/5/2015 2:52:32 PMThis is my 2nd comment on this thread. After 9 nightfalls post HoW drop I still have received zero E light from the activity. Also, NF drops in general continue to be abysmally ridiculous. I have only had one exotic drop from NF post release of HoW and it was a hunter helmet that I've had maxed out on my character since January. At least I could shard it and upgrade a weapon to 365. All of my other NF drops have been legendary weapons. Most of those (for some reason) have been the AR, Pest Control Matrix. This week, my teammates started roaring with laughter the first time one dropped from NF because they had seen me get so many in prior weeks. When we did our 2nd characters this week and it dropped for me again, their hilarity was uncontrollable. I must have offended RNGsus somehow ... I have not even attempted 34 PoE because all three of my characters are 32. I'm in the same boat as Edit 7: FatChubbE. I have at most 2-3 hours per night to play. In addition, I completely suck at PvP so Trials and Iron Banner are just NOT options for me to grind out E Light. There is another issue and it is one of priorities. I'm 38, an executive manager for the company I work for, and therefore often get interrupted mid-game by a phone call even late in the evening. Also, I love my wife and also want to spend time with her. I can't sit there and ignore her every other night and talk to strangers on my headset while running PoE. Imagine living with someone who sits on the couch talking on the phone constantly, but that person never talks to you. If I run multi-player (PvE or PvP) constantly the way I need to to grind E Light, then I am forced to ignore my gorgeous wife to do it. I can run bounties, etc solo and still have a meaningful conversation with her. Playing with a fireteam, that's just not possible. She didn't marry me to sit next to me on the couch while I talk with other people grinding for video game rewards day and night. It is also not fair for me to abandon a team when the CEO calls about something. But, Destiny is set up in such a way that I MUST do that in order to get the best gear and reach max level. In short, I purchased the Expansion Pass when I pre-ordered Destiny. That is the only reason I even have HoW. Had I not made that pre-order I would have seen all of the reviews and forum comments and passed on HoW. Reading forum posts and other public reaction forces me to conclude that there are many others in the same boat. This weekend is it for me. If I can not advance my characters further when I run 28 and 32 PoE on my three characters, I'll be done. No way I will purchase the next DLC unless the reviews are 5-star. The grind has finally killed my desire to keep playing.

Bump because the Title is correct.
-
3 a week at PoE 34 tough but doable 6 from IB isn't that difficult takes a little time but xp grows each day. 3 from 35. Not worth it! This is for max lvl afterall. Shouldn't be handed out.
-
Edited by dude1286: 6/5/2015 2:45:08 PMHow about adding a new 34 raid difficulty that adds modifiers that gives an etheric light at each check point. Doing the VoG with void burn could be challenging.

Why do people think that other people want to read a NOVEL that is solely about you bitching? You had to reply to yourself because you couldn't type any more words!! Wtf man? Stop doing drugs and go to bed.
-
Why does the PoE gear for the warlocks have look so ugly and so poorly designed, where the hunter and Titan armours look detailed?....
-
You have almost a full uninterrupted month worth of hours logged on this game and you can't get etheric light? Maybe it's just not the game for you lol. Plus it's kind of hard to listen to you bitch about not having the time to play enough after seeing that lol. Sounds like life got in the way during the HoW update and someone's angry they can't keep up anymore. I like having a challenge in a game, it keeps them worth playing. Plus you don't even need etheric light if you just focus on getting the armor core items. He had arms, chest, and now a helm. With an upgraded exotic you'd be at 34 right there, if you didnt choose 3 warlocks lol. 3-4 weeks to max out your level with very little skill required. How is this difficult? Even without having etheric light to upgrade your weapons, if they have 331 attack then you should be fine in most situations. I have less total time played than you, and have been taking it pretty slow with the HoW content and still managed to get my warlock to 34. Once I give my extra armor core to my hunter he'll be at 34 as well. I work and have a life outside of destiny and got here in my spare time. You need people to play with? You're obviously familliar with the forums, Go to the lfg section and find people to play with! That's how I found my clan and the people I play this game with the most. You can't just expect every game to be easy and fit into your daily schedule. If you can't handle the darkness, maybe you should head towards the light lol.
-
I vaulted like 12 Etheric light. You get it everywhere...
-
I totally agree with you. I haven't gotten 1 esthetic light since the expansion came out (I only saw 1 guy get it from the first nightfall) and to make up for the lack of better legendaries I'm forced to upgrade all exptics and ascend them, dismantling all my plan c's to get shards (a total of 5) and no one wants a 33, or even 33 1/2 to do the 34, no matter if your galley is maxed. So you have to grind the unforgiving ToO and get 5 wins in a run to get the armor

Just leave. Do you actually think we care. F.u. C.k man . Really . Delete your self.
