Let's face it. You see a thorn user almost every crucible match. I own 2 but don't use them in PvP because I feel like a douche. But it is an exotic and exotic weapons are supposed to be good but Realistically bungie can't do much to nerf it because its a 2 shot to the head like most other hand cannons in crucible like the Red Hand or pretty much any of the faction hand cannons. The DOT is irrelevant because let's be real, who here has been killed by the DOT of ANYTHING in crucible that many times? So instead of waiting for a nerf that might never happen, here are some counter plays next time you run into a thorn.
1. COVER IS YOUR FRIEND. Using cover is a basic skill needed to play any shooter and destiny is no exception. Be aware of your surroundings and duck behind something and regen your health when you're in a pinch.
2. EVASIVE MANEUVERS. Thorn has a mag size of 9, use that to your advantage. Moving side to side makes you a more difficult target even for the most seasoned of players. However jumping straight up or moving straight forward is a BIG mistake because you're just easier to hit that way.
3. RUN B*TCH RUUUUUN. Thorn takes about 3 shots to kill assuming none of them were head shots. So if you've already been shot twice, there's nothing forcing you to stay and die. Run like hell and regen before re-engaging. There's no shame in running because I'd rather not die and add to the other guys killstreak.
4. WHEN IN DOUBT...GO AROUND. Narrow hallways are a hand-cannon users wet-dream. If a thorn user is camping one end of a hallway it's because there are players adding to his kill feed. There's always another way into the room you're trying to get into, it might take longer to go the long way but that's better then dying over and over and over and over, plus you'll come up from behind and catch them off guard.
5. BANZAAAAIIII!!! Hand cannons are best suited to mid-range. Getting in close is probably a last resort though because it's High-risk but also high-reward. And of course shotguns trump just about everything in close range.
Note: Thorn is a tool to be used at your disposal like any other weapon in the game. I don't have anything against thorn users, and personally I don't believe thorn needs a nerf. This post is just for those players who keep complaining about thorn because I'm sick of seeing the "nerf thorn" posts.
I hope the tips help, feel free to comment anything I might of missed. Good luck out there, Guardians.
Edit: Any weapon can beat any other weapon in crucible. These are just general tips to give you an extra edge to pull off a fire fight. A weapon is only as good as the person holding it.
Edit: I personally almost never die from the DoT damage, the only times I have are when I take damage from another player entirely. I didn't realize it was such a problem for other players. Apparently crouching or sitting down stops the DoT? I haven't tried it myself but it can't hurt.

great stuff dude, but just one thing. you said that the other vendor weapons were 2 shots to the head. they are actually 3. loved the post though

Good post. The only problem I have with Thorn is when 3 or more people are using it on the other team. Getting team-shot by Thorn is extremely frustrating.

Great comments pal. I'm not a "nerf" kind of guy...I say bring what got you to the dance. You wouldn't bring a Prius to a racetrack and then complain that you got beat by the Shelby Mustang and demand an "engine nerf". My first few Crucible matches I got whipped because everyone had a float on the SUROS parade. My wife told me she didn't marry a loser and said "find a way, you magnificent SOB". So I did and now I can hold my own. I enjoy the Crucible because it seems like it's evolving and you need to adjust your tactics as you go. If you continue to try and get into "High Noon Saloon Duels" then you deserve to have your face melted by the green stuff.

I find that a thorn user is pretty easy to take down when using bad juju. Red death & vex both do the trick too

Edited by THEUNDEAD565: 5/8/2015 10:45:35 PM"How many times have you been realistically killed by the DOT." If I desides to use my Thorn, thats what I exclusively try to do. Nail you 2-3 times and walk away. Its my way of saying "-blam!- off" because I try to only use thorn against teams who excessively use it.
-
Use a pulse or auto with high caliber rounds. They can't kill you if they can't hit you.
-
The main thing with top tier guns like thorn is that you die so damn fast that it's irrelevant what you do most of the time. There's only about 4-5 guns that have that "what the -blam!- just happened?" quality.
-
I have to agree with you here. When you really start playing crucible often and learn the maps weapons are kind of irrelevant. Set yourself up for your best play style and own it. I have thorn but I prefer my 3 little words and a shotgun. That pulse rifle is a two burst every time if I land all shots. That mixed with radiant dance machines and a little strafe makes me extremely hard to kill at medium to long distances. And as op said shotguns crush thorn at close range. Plus you have teammates and grenades, so many factors play into the mechanics of PvP that one guy with a certain gun should never make that big of an impact. Work together. I almost always play crucible in a fireteam so we can talk and it makes life so much easier. And he was also right about TLW and the vex smoking thorn up close. It's all about how you play. Or just get a thorn and do so the same thing the other team is doing. Enough of this rant but just think about options other than nerf this nerf that

Thorn vs Hawkmoon, Hawkmoon should win every single time. Why does no one complain about Hawkmoon? Just curious.
-
Thorn really counters red death in crucible, they don't regenerate health even if they kill you. All weapons have weapons that can counter them. In a straight up firefight, it's TLW or the vex over thorn every time.
-
I killed Thorn users with my Khrostov. It's all about your and their play style. I don't care what the enemy uses. They are going down.
-
Omg no! This shifts blame onto Thorn Victims! This is exactly what's wrong with this Patriarc-Um I mean game...
-
You are the person Thorn complainers need to look for in these forum posts. You deserve a medal!
-
You could just turn off your console. Instant win!
-
Just nerf the fire rate and we will be fine. Seriously.

Red Death is insanely good. I don't know why more people are not using it.
-
Number 4 I'd pretty much an all around solid tactic in any pvp shooter. Most refer to it as flanking. What blows my mind is that I will play with entire teams who don't get this concept. Take blind watch from A spawn....I've had entire teams spend the whole game running into that little door above B and getting picked off over and over again.
-
I have another theory. Fight fire with fire. I know you feel like a douche when when you use it, but hell, it works.

Edited by TheMonkeyKing85: 5/8/2015 3:17:38 PMNeed help with crucible part of thorn. Xbox1 Anyone down to help please? I've squeezed out 170 points already but this is ridiculous...

Counter: 1. Thorn 2. TLW 3. Vex 4. Strangers Rifle 5. Any good Pulse Rifle Seriously. You guys are overestimating Thorn
-
Somebody told me today that if you crouch why poisoned from thorn, it would stop the poison. Can somebody confirm this?
-
Most basic counter....sit down. It stops the DOT
