I remember when it was unique and fresh. Now it's just a bunch of button mashing and if people know combos they looked them up. Gone are the days where people were impressed when you pulled off a fatality because you figured it out (like doing a circle with the joystick to get Liu Kang to do a cartwheel and decapitate his opponent). Now everyone just looks up how to do every move and combo on the internet or through in-game menus. I won't lie, I love fighting games but I lost interest in the MK series long ago. It became too stale for me.
There's also a flaw in your logic in validating a game based on tournament status. If you used that logic, games like F-Zero were terrible because they there was no organized competitive play.
If you want to test yourself in a fighting game, track down a copy of Eternal Champions and see how good you are.
