Nope. I don't understand how other than friction.

They draw power from the sun. Watch the anime. Their power grows stronger during the day (water benders are stronger at night) the solar eclipse leaves them powerless, and sozin's comet is a giant fireball that comes close to earth and they grow very powerful because of it. They also seem to draw from some inner force (the same energy that allows all benders to bend). Seriously watch the anime.
