I have a hard time believing that it's possible for anyone to complete this Nightfall without hiding under the stairs or using some other cheese that I'm not aware of.
If you did it, post here and explain how.
I probably won't believe you anyway, but if you really did it, I'm impressed!
edit: The actual question is, did you do it without any kind of cheese whatsoever.
So, if you hid under the stairs or on top of the lights or did anything else other than face him straight up, your answer should be "NO".
next edit: I changed the title so people might stop misunderstanding the point of the question.
I think the answer is about 50/50, cheese/no-cheese.
The answer to no-cheese seems to be Titan bubble, weapons of light and gyllenhoorns, lots and lots of gajyllenhoorns.
I've done it that way on normal, but this time there were a ton more (and tougher) enemies in the room before Valus spawned.
The shields on the psions were ridiculous.
Hiding under the stairs made it a problem to use the gyllenhoorn but hunter invisibility helped a bit.
I'll try it again next time w/ a Titan.
Good thread. Thanks!
final edit: I guess different people have different definitions of "cheese".
IMO, hiding in a spot where you are enclosed on all sides and the enemy can't get to you at all (as long as you stand in the right spot), but you can still hit them, is "cheesy", meaning "cheap".
NOT THAT THERE'S ANYTHING WRONG WITH THAT.
Hey, I think using a fire team full of gajigglyhorns is kinda cheesy too, but whatever works.
I'm not judging anyone for playing cheesy - I do it all the time.
I guess what I mean by cheese is a strategy (legit or not) that takes most/all of the intended challenge and risk out of a task.
Sometimes, especially when it's a strike I've done a million times, I don't care about the challenge, I just want to get it done, so I do it the cheesiest way possible.
Other times the challenge and difficulty are what makes it fun.
In my opinion, it's your game and you can play it however you'd like - as long as it doesn't get you banned or piss off the people you're playing with (too much).

Can do without cheesing. Not possible without hiding at some point in some way, shape, or form, since that includes everything that blocks his attacks.
-
Just stayed next to the entrance of the area
-
Yes. Hid on the light instead.
-
We all had ghorns so he went down pretty fast. Quicker than I thought really.
-
I did one time without hiding and one with the steps. The time i did it without the steps we used the entrance right side area.
-
Everybody is talking about hiding under the stairs. Idk what everyone is talking about. The only cheese I know of is on the lamps above him.
-
I did it solo three times using this strategy.

Edited by TAZ__KID: 4/8/2015 9:43:23 PMMy group used a strategy that we even use in roc strikes. The main issue over roc strikes is the amount of yellow bars and the psions being shielded but 2-3 shots from a word of crota takes the psions out and the rest you mainly just need to stay away from. If we got in trouble we hid for a minute to get our health back and to clear a path but for the most part we were cheeseless. We also used titan bubbles with weapons of light which helps.

Pop a bubble with weapons of light across the room from where Valus comes out. All 3 guardians use bubble and unload their rockets on Valus. Immediately pop an ammo synth and unload again. Run up top to the right and hit Valus with snipers or fusion rifles. He won't have much health left at this point, and will be dead in a couple of minutes tops. Just keep moving so you don't take too much damage.

Edited by SmoggyPluto: 4/8/2015 9:38:31 PMI tackle him in the corner to the right, as soon as you walk into the big room..pretty much the entrance..lol.. just don't go too far back and you wont spawn the "cheese mobs" can get 3 black hammer shots over n over..while standing on top of some boxes or w/e..
-
Man I had 2 dudes I was with go hide in that wall, they both died eventually, booted them, finished solo, Got hawkmoon
-
As soon as you enter the room, stay that corner, you can hide behind the box when needed and can free fire on him
-
The ceiling lamp was way better.
-
I personally wasn't under the stairs but my teammates were so all the adds (almost all the ads) swarmed them. I killed most of them then would fire at valus. Took a while but yeah. It worked
-
Well what we did was enter the room we all fire snipers and rockets from across the room at him.... When he rotates we move along the top to the other side all 3 focusing on getting cover and clearing adds along the way... We repeat snipers and rockets... He rotates we rotate keep in mind my team always has defender Titan for a bubble for cover. It's not hard if you have a team that works and moves as a unit not a bunch of solo heroes
-
The other two I was with were under the stairs. I popped rockets and sniper shots between running from one side of the room to the other to avoid enemies.
-
Bubble all day
-
I hid in the wall with a sniper with armor piercing rounds.

Edited by o0o ANTH0NY o0o: 4/8/2015 7:17:25 PMEasiest NF did them in 45 mins Edit: by "them" I mean all 3
-
Get on top of the lamp
-
Easy, jump on top of the light on the ceiling, and Valus becomes the easiest strike boss.
-
Not that I did it but I'm sure a fire team of 3 GJallarhorn users could take him out 50 seconds after re spawn if all shots are fired
-
Bubbles. Bubbles are the answer.

Played this strike as a no burn NF before a few months back and honestly it's not that difficult. The only thing to watch for was lightswitch and even then you never have to get up close to anyone. And with no burn the enemies are no big worry. Just a tougher standard strike in the end. Big shout out to the team I played with. Got my 2nd Thunderlord with them and even 2 months prior got my first Thunderlord with them too. These guys are a joy to play with, great teamwork and respect to Greyfox-X12 and Amano_Jyaku77
